Hatred is the ugliest of emotions. But for oppressed nations, hatred is a hidden treasure. Buried deep in the heart, it can sustain resistance for generations. To reestablish the Russian empire, Putin needs a relatively bloodless victory that will lead to a relatively hateless occupation. By spilling more and more Ukrainian blood, Putin is making sure his dream will never be realised.

Putin’s invasion was premised on the idea that Ukraine was not a nation.
Even if the country is eventually defeated militarily in this war, the Ukrainian people have proven themselves willing to fight and die for their flag.

Yep. Putin thought the Ukrainians would not fight and all he would have to do is roll into Kyiv like putting on an old fashioned Soviet military parade.
No different than what Hitler said about Czechoslovakia in 1938, it was created after WWI by Britain and France to keep Germany in check.
