Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg (FL)

100 LAPS | 180 MILES

The 1.8-mile, 14-turn (5 lefts, 9 rights) circuit incorporates streets of downtown St. Petersburg and a section of runway of Albert Whitted Airport.

After the long front stretch, there's a tight right-hander into Turn 1 and then a quick left-hand turn. Plenty of drivers have gotten into trouble in these two turns over the years. There are two other long straights with heavy braking zones that afford opportunities to overtake.

Broadcast by NBC & Peacock Networks, 12 noon ET.

Arie L. Won me a podium visit and a ring at the ‘97
Indy 500.
Life has Always been a race
I’m worried how it ends.

That off-camber, downhill ‘corkscrew’ was always a thriller. An F1 driver was killed there, so they modified the track and removed the nearby trees.

F1? You mean that spec racing series? The one that used to be about bleeding-edge automotive technology, but that now is about promoting anti-MMGW propaganda?

The top of the
Corkscrew killed a
Penske Driver after his
Throttle stuck.
A Bloody mess,literally.

It sure has changed over the past decades. I remember the 50s, 60s & 70s were exciting, but since, it’s gotten far too political. I still enjoy the racing; I just skip the pre-and post-race crap.

Remember the Brabham “fan” car and their “sucker” cars? And the Tyrell Elf 6-wheeler? Those were leading-edge technology machines, all too soon killed-off by FOCA and FIA.

Gonzalo Rodriguez...basilar skull fracture like Earnhardt..I wonder if he would have survived with the HANS device?

HANS would have given
Ganzalo a chance. I talk to
SAFETY Responders and they said his aorta was ripped
from his Heart.
He seemed to have a racing
Future,
Tragic.

Everyone in the pits was one, in some way or another. I was too, even piloting the Porsche 962 at 100-190mph. If someone else needed help, I pitched in and helped get it done. I swept concrete floors, cleaned tools, emptied garbage, when I wasn’t testing tires. Those were fun times.

I just wish I’d had an extra $40-50,000 to get my Class A License, to drive in competition. ‘Twas not to be.

Had a Crew Chief, Larry Curry, who came from
Canadian Tire. He could make a Car Sing!
You’re Correct in that what ever the Team needed
I’d make it happen,
even co-drove the Transporter from Midland Texas to Longbeach,,,,
Breaker one-nine!
