Not interested in an investment. It's purely for the sake of just having some gold.
Now is not the time to buy it, but, I've heard of people buying gold from dealers, and later discover it's not real.
I understand the difference between spot price and market price, but a couple of stores have been recommended.
Tulsa Gold and Silver. For example.
My question is, can such a place be trusted?
I bought from these folks around 440.00.
It’s worked out but only when I sell it.
I have never touched it.
Applying that logic, a 300lb wife is worth more than one that weighs in at 125.
My brother has 2 mines in California. He is installing new recovery equipment now. Probably later this year you can buy from the mine. It will gold bars maybe one ouncers, direct from the refinery with stamped bar and chain of custody documentation from the refinery. I will ask him for a discount for Freepers.
the only direction that gold can go is up.
I want the contents of Fort Knox. Think big.
On ebay you can purchase a gold test kit for under $15.00
“...Waht Did Patton say about Fortified Defenses?” [beancounter13, post 41]
Patton - on presumes you mean George Smith Patton Jr, USMA 1908 - was wrong.
And he didn’t say “fortified defenses;” George C Scott said “fixed defenses” in the 1970 film directed by Franklin J Schaffner & written by Francis Ford Coppola. Adapted from the book _Patton: Ordeal & Triumph_ by Ladislas Farago (Ivan Oblensky, 1963). Some doubt exists about the provenance of the quote anyway. Common occurrence.
Fortifications - armored/engineered fixed defenses - are no good in isolation but can be vital components in over all resistance to invasion. None are completely bulletproof but they can cause major delays to an advancing enemy.
They figured prominently in both World Wars. For starters, read Sir John Keegan’s one-volume history of World War One.
Yes, well, I was referring to individual people stockpiling ammo for the theoretical collapse. Such an individual, even with a large family and a large stockpile, would eventually be overrun.
Guns, ammo, and cast iron are good to the extent they help acquire food for survival, but planning for major defense is not a good idea. A better idea is to acquire and use your enemy’s weapons: that way, you can always acquire more ammo by attacking the enemy.
“Forts win wars!” - SpongeBob
Stockpile grain (oats, corn wheat) legumes and freeze drief fruit and veggies. If yo have that all covered then go to ammo. If that’s covered go to coins. JMHO. That’s my approach. I have no shiny coins. I have jewelry that I can claim is excess. My approach is may not fit your views and that’s ok. A 18K 20 in necklace looks less prepared than a .1 oz gold coin. It’s all just a trade off. Good luck. We are not getting out of this world alive.
Having said that, I really wish I had a few monster boxes of silver dollars. But I don’t so it’s irrelevant.

Witty one-liners are neither fact nor wisdom; they do not advance understanding & ability.
Research and reflection can do both. No guarantees in the real world.
People win wars. Instrumentalities (forts, ordnance, intel, communications, munitions, other logistics) can help. Nothing works in isolation; success is never a given.
If you’re feeling short on of useful adages, try out this one:

“...There is always a bigger fish.
“Unless they have a metal detector, nobody will know how much gold I will be carrying. And I could easily carry $100k while still looking like a common, unwashed peasant.” [beancounter13, post 50]
Quoting Star Wars film dialog cannot necessarily be distilled into sensible advice.
Bartering of precious metals for food & goods depends completely on the pre-existence of a stable social order. We dare not assume that will prevail in potential conditions of instability & fragmentation.
An armed person can easily relieve someone who is unarmed of whatever they possess - $1.00 or $100,000.00, doesn’t matter.
An unarmed person attempting to disarm and rob an armed person faces a more difficult task.
Ammunition is indeed less portable than precious metals, but that only illustrates the truism that there are no perfect solutions, only compromises.

“...brass, copper and lead...” [Delta 21, post 13]
Wonderful image & message.
Bullet jackets aren’t plain copper. They are gilding metal, a 95-5 alloy of copper and zinc. In other words, a form of brass.
It took the US War Dept 30 years of experimenting to come up with a mix & attendant heat treatment to minimize jacket metal fouling. Before that, special lubricants were used by target shooters to avoid much metal fouling by cupronickel jackets (in use since smokeless small arms ammo was introduced, in 1892). Lube was impractical for field use in rifles, and in machine guns generally.
Some bullet makers use solid bronze. Don’t know the formulation.
lol ... definite post of the day !
You're being obtuse now, because you're on uncertain ground.
There is always a bigger fish.
But it won't be you, will it?
Let’s be clear: I am not advocating for disarmament. Far from it. In fact, self defense should be the first priority for everyone.
However, beyond what is needed to provide sustenance via hunting, and escape via a roadblock, I don’t see a need in building an armory. I will follow Sam Houston’s example before I follow that set by Will Travis.
But it won’t be you, will it?

I won’t be stealing from someone else, if that is what you mean….
What does it profit a man to gain the world and lose his own soul?
What I mean is that you will be the punk crying for his mama because the bigger better man will have knocked you down and stolen your golden quarter.
Dummy.
Sorry. You missed the part about self defense. Besides no one will even know I have anything worth taking.
Meanwhile, I wish you lots of luck with your AR15 and 5M round of ammo that will be obliterated by a flying drone…..
I have not sold back, but they publish their margins/pricing right on the site, both buying and selling. You are always going to be paying a percentage with anyone.
