I equate it more to Turkey invading Northern Cyprus in 1974.
And Turkey is still there today.
And guess what? Nobody seems to be all that upset about it. Turkey didn’t go on to try to rebuild The Ottoman Empire.
Big difference is that Turkey always claimed Cyprus but Russia has never claimed and does not claim Ukraine, only the Russian territories given to Ukraine in 1954 against Russia’s will.
