For Putin to declare that Ukraine has no political or cultural existence is particularly disingenuous because at one time, Kievan Rus, in what is now Ukraine, was the dominant, mature political entity, when the infant Muscovy was still largely in the shadow of the great Khanate Hordes, which exerted a strong element of eastern tyrannical political expectations that cultures to the west never experienced, like the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Russia has been making similar assertions of the non-entity of less powerful nations for centuries, Poland, Finland and other nations which had to assert themselves culturally, to establish their own languages, arts, music and theatre.
A culture which is not in the current fray, but which shows the potential for military conflict, as with stories of domination by Ottoman Turkey, is highlighted in some Hungarian stories by Mor Jokai (1825-1904).

The stories are adequately narrated by a woman with a Scandinavian or Baltic accent, quite understandable. The writing is quite good; they make good late-night or bedtime stories.
Yeah. 800 years ago, things were different.
We need to stop caring. This situation will work itself out. Details don’t matter to me.
Less than 200 years ago the great poet Taras Shevchenko led a Ukranian renaissance of the arts. One that was the equal of that which occurred in Russia.
