In all three situations, the NZ defense had been completely turned, broken in midfield and burned down the flanks. On each of the own goals, the NZ players are all turned with their backs to the Americans and to the ball, sprinting to get back to cover. NZ didn’t bunker in. They pressed high and tried to pressure the U.S. When the U.S. broke the press, they got burned. Bad things happen when you are caught that completely out of position.
And I think on the header, it doesn’t look like she ever saw the ball, and it bounced off her head. You’re right. In each case, NZ looked like the attackers moving toward the goal. Not a good place to be.
