Nirvana was good but not transcendent. Pearl Jam whines a lot and after they fired their original drummer Dave Abruzzee they went downhill. Stone Temple Pilots wrote catchy songs but drugs robbed Scott Weiland of his vox, then life.
The closest to AIC was Soundgarden (who was great too IMHO), but I think the dual-vocal effects with Cantrel added extra depth.
I think Duvall is a superior all-around musician vs the late smacked-out Staley and let the band FINALLY make some touring money.

IMHO, Soundgarden is the best of the Grunge era...'Badmotorfinger' blew
me away the first time I heard it wailing in the halls of my dorm, but AIC is
a very close second. 'Dirt' is one of my all time favorite albums. A popular
t-shirt back in the day stated: "Pearl Jam: Enabling Chicks to dig Grunge
too"...lol
