Sounds more like he fumbled the mic like dropping the ball. Stupid expression.
Perhaps, but if I can find a better example, you’ll understand better.
I will concede the author used the term only as a metaphor/opinion and erroneously cut the room’s reaction from the video clip (which would have made the point).
he has my vote. Forget thee assistant Dems doing nothing.
In contrast, this is better described as a ‘mic drop’ speech moment with appropriate response at the very end.

I think I understand what the expression is supposed to mean after reading all the comments, but IMO, it’s just another convoluted expression that I think those of us with half a brain should not “pick up”.
I suppose it’s second nature to me with my public speaking training/experience.
This might be helpful/elaborate:

Well, this may not endear me to you, but I honestly wish women by-and-large WOULD “drop the mic” and shut the hell up.
Certain exceptions, of course (Candace Owens, for one).
Frankly, sometimes I really wish my wife would realize the value of the mic drop: It would radically minimize my suffering.

No, no, no, teach them to “speak into the Mic”.
That man is a powerfully eloquent speaker. Fervent, extemporaneous and heart-felt. I bet his neighbors are rightly proud he speaks for them. Those goons on the school boards and in government are no match for that.
The Women's Movement is the road to ruin and sadly many women are on that road

The evidence is everywhere.
Honestly, if I had a 2nd chance, I’d seek out a Conservative scientist.
It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication...For I would that all men were even as I myself... I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, it is good for them if they abide even as I. But if they cannot contain, let them marry...1 Corinthians 7:1,7-9.
I wouldn't want to lay this on anyone, really, which is why Paul said in this part of scripture that he was writing by permission not commandment (vs. 6).
I feel the same way as Paul comes across, especially in this day and age when the societal train has gone completely off the rails and (especially American) women have gone off the deep end with it.
I'm 74, filled with the Holy Spirit, and feel Jesus' presence pretty much all the time. How can His presence replace a woman's? Well, I don't know. I mean obviously not in some ways, but amazingly, I don't miss the sex that much and the peace I have especially with His presence, is well worth it.
Not for everyone. Jesus said, "He that is able to receive it, let him receive it (Matt. 19:12).
