The data are clear: The boys are not all right
The Washington Post ^ | Feb 8, 2022 | Andrew Yang

Boys and men across all regions and ethnic groups have been failing, both absolutely and relatively, for years. This is catastrophic for our country.

Men now make up only 40.5 percent of college students. Male community college enrollment declined by 14.7 percent in 2020 alone, compared with 6.8 percent for women. Median wages for men have declined since 1990 in real terms. Roughly one-third of men are either unemployed or out of the workforce. More U.S. men ages 18 to 34 are now living with their parents than with romantic partners.

More than two-thirds of manufacturing workers are men; the sector has lost more than 5 million jobs since 2000. That’s a lot of unemployed men. Not just coincidentally, “deaths of despair” — those caused by suicide, overdose and alcoholism — have surged to unprecedented levels among middle-aged men over the past 20 years.

Yes, men have long had societal advantages over women and in some ways continue to be treated favorably. But male achievement — alongside that of women — is a condition for a healthy society. And male failure begets male failure, to society’s detriment. Our media, institutions and public leadership have failed to address this crisis, framing boys and men as the problem themselves rather than as people requiring help. This needs to change. Helping boys and men succeed should be a priority for all our society’s institutions.

Citizens voted decades ago to create an unconstitutional system where "the government" would pay their bills. These voter didn't know or didn't care where that money would come from.

We've been living in a system of official government lies on top of outright propaganda from media and irritainment sources.

More and more men take the red pill and realize they're busting their ass with suppressed wages and increased taxation in order support countless strangers.

The Tang Ping ("lying flat") movement is the inevitable response. The only way to win the game is not to play it.

Yang seems to be one of those leftists who can actually have a thought once in a while. He’s dead on.

I volunteer heavily with Trail life USA, a Christian outdoor focused character development association for boys. We’ve realized the war on boys for a long time.

Boys need to be loud and obnoxious, yet at times able to settle it down and learn stuff.

His point about “We need to be needed. We imagine ourselves as builders, soldiers, workers, brothers — part of something bigger than ourselves. We deal with idleness terribly” is absolutely spot on.

That’s what we strive for in Trail Life. Our vision statement reads “Our vision is to be the premier national character development organization for young men which produces godly and responsible husbands, fathers, and citizens.”

In other words, we want to lead boys to be strong, courageous, and as Yang says Needed.

"Yes, one of the least credible most biased news sources I know, but this article is right."

But it is only an "Opinion" allowed so that WaPo can falsely claim to be objective.

Many boys are thus often growing up raised by single mothers, the share more than doubling between 1980 and 2019, from 18 percent to 40 percent.

Which the welfare of the Left fosters.

"Male community college enrollment declined by 14.7 percent in 2020 alone, compared with 6.8 percent for women. Median wages for men have declined since 1990 in real terms. Much due to The Pill and the fornication and feminism it fosters. Never before has something so small that is near-universally ingested by women had such profound insidious negative effects.

Speaking of males, I’ve noticed they have rather high voices. In their 20’s, they squeak as high as old ladies. Is this a recent phenomenon?

Seems men deciding college isn’t worth it is what is bothering the author.

"The data are is clear: The boys are not all right"

Fixed it for them.

If you feel compelled to use natural number, you should move to formerly great Britain.

This is America. We use grammatical number here.

Re: College is necessary for some professions,

This is true only because of state licensing and the convenience of attending a college.

Let’s examine this:

....At one time college was not required to practice law. One “read” the law and took a bar exam.

.....Nearly all of the material needed to be a physician, engineer, nurse, dentist, physical therapist etc. changes very little from year to year. It is available in used textbooks and on the Internet. The one thing missing is inexpensive certifiable exams to prove mastery of the material.

....Obviously, labs and clinical rotations are needed for many professions...but...it shouldn’t cost a quarter of a million in tuition to get this experience. A more reasonable $25,000 should be enough.

Re: insulted

Sadly it’s worse than that. By attending college they risk their reputations being ruined by accusations of racist and sex offender.

Having told boys that being boys is wrong . . . what else would we expect? Automatically seeing that b,d,p, and q are all the same shape — learning disabled! Please note that until introduced to the English alphabet, every object i children’s experience is the same regardless of being upside down or mirrored!!! Those who automatically see those letters as the same shape have a phenomenal ability, but instead of telling them that, yes, it’s the same shape, and when it’s this way, it says “bee,” and when it’s this way, it says, “dee.”

But no, can’t do that!!! We tell them they’re stupid, put them in special ed, and then ignore the problem when 65 - 85% of the children in special ed are boys!!

But hey, there are no biological differences between boys and girls. It’s all in our heads!!

Men Going Their Own Way - Basically looking after their own happiness and well-being while largely withdrawing from society. Understandable when so much effort is directed towards marginalizing them...

Until men understand that it's mostly them doing it to each other and stop contributing to it, it will never change no matter how far they try to run from it.

Affirmative action/reverse discrimination has been upheld by the Supreme Court; they are past trying to change it.

They’ll just dedicate their lives to their own happiness (as everyone else does, without any repercussion).

Many Freepers will hate me for that, I’m afraid, but you are very right, imho.

But to defend myself, I don’t so much come from what we mainland Europeans sometimes call the “Anglo-Saxon school of Conservatism”. This has, as you all know, a strong emphasis on property rights and personal liberty. That is what sets it apart from mainland European conservatism.

Nothing wrong with that per se, but here I think that the values of the former are at odds with traditional conservatism in the British “High Tory” mould (which I consider close to mainland European conservatism), or - to some degree - paleoconservatism.

N.B.: There is, however, one thing I deplore about paleoconservatism: the traces of anti-semitism which I think I can notice in some of its proponents.

Not just the govt to blame, terrible helicopter parenting as well.

I blame "participation" trophies.

A generation was raised and taught that if they simply participate, they get the same rewards as everyone else.

Well, life doesn't work that way. There are winners and there are losers.

In real life, losers don't get trophies.

Here's the problem with that. The majority of the Supreme Court, as well as the police and the divorce court judges who find any excuse to side with the women have one thing in common. They are mostly men.

BTW, if men are so marginalized, then how come they have billions to spend on prostitution every year in this country alone? Could the fact that they would rather spend this money on prostitution than on class action lawsuits have anything to do with why they are discriminated against?

What class action suit do you bring against a Supreme Court ruling?

If you don’t see men being marginalized in the larger culture, then there is nothing to discuss; accept that men for no reason whatsoever are retreating from the larger society and are quite content to die childless with a whole collection of toys. As I mentioned earlier on the thread, this nonsense is in the news because WOMEN don’t like the outcome. I work with plenty of women approaching retirement childless with four-legged “fur-babies”, and they resent that they are taxed to provide for imported peoples’ children.

When affirmative action falls in court, it will be because many blacks are outraged that white women are also “beneficiaries” of the soft bigotry of lowered expectations; as it stands now, the blacks are already losing out to Hispanics in set-aside jobs, college seats, etc..
