Tragedy struck at a popular recreation spot near Lake Tahoe in California's Sierra Nevada as an ice-skater fell through the ice and died on Saturday afternoon.
Eight people were ice-skating on the frozen Stampede Reservoir in the Tahoe National Forest 30 miles north of Lake Tahoe when six people fell through the ice. Five of those skaters were rescued while one person drowned and died, officials said.
Advertisement The two skaters who didn't fall through the ice helped rescue others, the Sierra County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
One individual who was skating the farthest from the group went under the water and others soon lost visual contact, the sheriff's office said.
The skaters told emergency responders where their friend was last seen in the water and a rescue aircraft flew over the lake attempting to locate the individual.
One of the rescued skaters was transported to Tahoe Forest Hospital with a dislocated shoulder, officials said. No other injuries were reported.
The Placer County Sheriff’s Office dive team found the body late Sunday morning, multiple media outlets reported Sunday night.
Well to paraphrase the late, great Johnnie Cochran
If the ice is too thin, you’re gonna fall in.
They should have listened to Christopher Walken.
The author wanted to make doubly sure we knew the person was dead.
it should be “froze and died”, not entirely drown. Below freezing temps causes lakes and rivers to freeze.
I guess George Bailey was not available for rescue.
+1
Global warming?
By the time I got home, my pants were frozen solid. I did not dare tell my parents what happened until years later. The punishment they would have wielded out (for me putting myself in that situation in the first place) would have been far worse!
There was a lake up in Melrose, MA that we used to play hockey on. It was called Spot Pond. A Melrose fire truck would drive onto the lake and park in the middle. That told the rest of us the ice was safe. If the fire truck wasn't there, we weren't allowed to go onto it.
I never did figure out how the Melrose FD knew the ice was safe enough to drive a truck out there in the first place. I don't think they ever lost a truck.
They probably walked out and drilled a hole to assess the ice thickness first.
Consistent with the current attitudes regarding accidental deaths reported on this compassionate and Christian website, the jokes here reflect what this site has devolved to........
Stampede is a reservoir. As such it is subject to the water level changing even in the Winter.
Sad news...
Unfortunately, the death will be attributed to Climate Change, which means it will become a political event instead of a human tragedy.
Props to the author who actually knows the correct use of the word farthest.
One individual who was skating the farthest from the group
RIP to the person who died.
Just said the same thing, to hubby.
We had a little mudhole at the end of the street at the apartment complex where I lived. One of the upstairs tenants was a big, burly Massachusetts state trooper. The kids would bang on his apartment door and have him come out and jump up and down on the ice to test it. He grumped and growled, but always did it for the kids.
Well Mr. Bojangles dog “UP and Died!”
Question. Should there be a local or state ordinance/law requiring skaters on ponds to wear life_preserver vests?
Many of these type of tragedies are preventable.
Just asking!
