The WHO has strongly recommended that doctors use an arthritis drug called baricitinib to treat people with severe or critical COVID-19.
The drug belongs to a class of medications known as Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, which block the activity of immune signaling molecules called cytokines.
In severe and critical COVID-19, an excess of cytokines in the body, or “cytokine stormTrusted Source,” sends the immune system into overdrive, with potentially fatal consequences.
After reviewing the latest results from clinical trials, a panel of experts at the WHO concluded that there is good evidence that baricitinib improves survival, reduces the need for mechanical ventilation, and decreases duration of hospitalization.
The drug does not appear to cause any increase in adverse events.
The panel recommends a treatment combination of baricitinib and corticosteroids, which also calm the immune response.
However, the panel advises against combining baricitinib with arthritis drugs called interleukin-6 inhibitors, which have a similar effect on the immune system.
Instead, it recommends that doctors choose either baricitinib or an interleukin-6 inhibitor on the basis of cost, availability, and their clinical experience.

You do realize that critical care is complex. I assumed that as people proclaim their expertise they are looking at and studying things. Apparently they are not. To not really my job to explain to every person on this forum every technical detail of changing treatments. I can educate where people are incorrect with the facts but the care of a critically ill is complex behind explaining a change in a medication or theory.
I don’t explain every change in vent strategy because it is technical beyond most people’s expertise. I am happy answer any questions.
“You do realize that critical care is complex.”
Duh. So is the IT network that supports your hospital. I have built a few of those, btw.
“I assumed that as people proclaim their expertise they are looking at and studying things. Apparently they are not.”
The NIH and the CDC included, apparently.
“not really my job to explain to every person on this forum every technical detail of changing treatments.”
Yet you’re quite happy to talk down to people who don’t have your skill sets as if they’re all low grade morons. Nice bedside manner ya got there, doc.
“I can educate where people are incorrect with the facts but the care of a critically ill is complex behind explaining a change in a medication or theory.”
It must be difficult to do that when the “facts” seem to change faster than the weather. Believe it or not there are some really smart people here. Maybe even smarter than you.
A simple “Hey fellow Freepers we are having some success with this particular medicine. Maybe you should talk to your doctor about it. It’s no miracle cure but it seems to work fairly well on patients who fit the following criteria.”
Just a suggestion.

Eli Lilly wants in on the COVID game. And yet neither out-of-patent HCQ nor out-of-patent ivermectin are to be allowed to the plebes.
Eli Lilly has sued in Dehli High Court for patent infringement against some Indian companies.
One reads "In this case, MSF pointed out that in many countries baricitinib is under patent of the American company Eli Lilly, which sells it at a price close to $2,000 dollars, and that this could affect the use of this drug for the treatment of patients in countries with fewer resources. “In countries like Bangladesh or India a generic version of this drug can be obtained for less than $6, but in many countries generic baricitinib is not available because it is under a patent monopoly with Eli Lilly, a company that has applied for and obtained patents in many places, including countries hard hit by the pandemic, such as Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia and Russia,” the organization added.>

The $6 price tag for generic manufacturers being sued in various countries, gives an idea about the Eli Lilly pricing of an existing drug versus its cost to manufacture.
The game is one of massive profitability.
Fair enough
For the record I know IT is complex. I would tend to not comment on your expertise because it is well beyond mine. Just because i took a year of physics in college means I can sort of understand your language but am not an expert. I would hope the same reverse courtesy would apply (this is not aimed at you in particular) but many posters here with no particular knowledge are opining things that are just plain wrong and then calling those of us with expertise murderers. Certainly one can understand why my colleagues would be salty.
It’s not your expertise I’m questioning, old chap. It’s your tactics.
For the record I’ve never called you a murderer and probably never will. But you can come off as a bit of an arrogant jerk, wholly unintentional I’m sure. Lord knows I’ve done it often enough. Just ask my wife.
“Certainly one can understand why my colleagues would be salty.”
I do. And I’d hope your colleagues would understand why we, the long suffering American public who have put up with 2-1/2 years of lockdowns, mask mandates, friends and relations dying, our livelihoods being threatened and in many cases destroyed if we don’t put an experimental medicine into our bodies.
All while the vaunted “medical experts” and our garbage “leaders” can’t seem to find their own asses with both hands and a map. So it’s no surprise that we regular Americans are becoming more than a little salty ourselves.
So maybe you could give us a little slack. I promise to try to give you the same courtesy.
Have a pleasant day.

I appreciate your perspective and don’t disagree with a lot of what you have said
I will take your advice. For the record since say one I have said the lockdowns are tyranny and no one should ever be compelled to have a vaccination. Period. The political tyranny with the agreement of some physicians should result in their disqualification from the profession.
I hope you have a great Friday evening. I appreciate your perspective.
baricitinib?
Is that like icitinbarin-ebriated?
or tchikensoop therapy.
“The political tyranny with the agreement of some physicians should result in their disqualification from the profession.”
Wholeheartedly agreed. When medicine or science gets entangled with politics politics will win every single time. The lack of pushback by the medical professionals has been both astonishing and very frightening.
“I hope you have a great Friday evening.”
Thanks. We intend to. There’s a couple of prime bone in Strip steaks coming to temp and a nice bottle of Cabernet breathing to wash it down.
“I appreciate your perspective.”
And I do yours.
Enjoy your weekend.

I love you man.

What’s wrong with diphenhydramine...
Guess what's cheap, easily available, and on the list!
Interesting. Thanks.
