School Board Demeans Parents Over Controversial Books

A North Carolina school board doubles down on student indoctrination.

On January 31, 2022 the Orange County NC School Board held a special meeting, reviewing the books Out of Darkness, Gender Queer, and Lawn Boy.

The board voted unanimously to keep these books in the public-school libraries. The board then waived procedure stating the status of the material as indefinitely approved, unable to be challenged after two years per the stated policy. Parents needed to be punished for raising concerns!

Towards the end of the meeting, board member Sarah Smylie, inferred that parental concern is a “distraction” from real work. To imply that parents are only doing this for the sake of “distraction” is incorrect. Trust me, there are better things I could be doing with my time than reading and researching these books. Parents, like myself, participate in this conversation because public school students deserve the highest quality academic and creative materials and resources available. These books do not meet that standard. This has nothing to do with the ethnicity or sexuality of the characters. This has to do with the level of discourse and gratuitous nature of the sexual and violent passages in these books. Plenty of books make people “uncomfortable” that absolutely should be kept in school libraries. For example, if the board members read anything by (minority) Thomas Sowell, they would probably feel “uncomfortable,” not because of grotesque sexual descriptions (of which there aren’t any), but because of his massive intellect and dealings with facts. And yet his books are not present in these school libraries. OCS has “weeded” books like Indian in the Cupboard because of “uncomfortable” stereotypes, yet on 1/31 all the board members emphasized they won’t “ban” books. These board members already have agreed to ban books

Where do these nutcakes come from? Orange County is in North Carolina, although it is technically within the Durham metro area which probably explains it.

Remove children from the schools.

Shame and marginalize the school boa4d members as SEXUAL PREDATORS and throw lawsuits and accuse and file criminal charges against them.

Drive them out.

The books in question are sexually explicit gay indoctrination books, IMHO.

You answered your own question: Durham, which contains multiple
Marxist universities and Triangle research park is a breeding ground
for these sort of individuals...

One of these days, a school board member will find himself up a tree.

She IMPLIED; listeners “inferred”. Seriously ... People are paid for their writing “skills”?

All they have to do is vote in the school board elections.

And you don’t dare have any views that are even slightly off their new “religion”. At Georgetown University, the Law School rescinded an offer to Pro. Shapiro, who has a great academic background, bc he dared question Senile’s selection of a Supreme Court justice based on race. The Black Law Students Assn. demanded this action. Instead of telling this group to pound salt and speak up for academic freedom, the law school chiefs went running for the exits and with tears of shame streaming down their faces meekly gave in to the “demands”. Georgetown is a crappy law school that just got a lot crappier.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

So, the county covers the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of NC. College towns, large black populations, lots of tech folks and lots of liberals.

Conservatives aren’t taking over anything there.

Unfortunately, I have a liberal cousin who lives in Chapel Hell. We hardly ever talk and I plan on never visiting that communist “paradise”.

If people like this are in charge, why would you send your child to those schools?

You know they are going to indoctrinate and pervert your child.

Get rid of them and hire decent educators.

“The board then waived procedure stating the status of the material as indefinitely approved, unable to be challenged after two years per the stated policy.”

There’s no such thing as a plenary schoolboard. What one schoolboard does today can be unraveled and cancelled by the next schoolboard.
