Yes, such cases did exist, although not everywhere. Other SS simply ran away to save their own skins or surrendered, for better or worse. Regular army units were often reported to negotiate partial surrenders.

Remember Gen. Patton, who gave his word to all German units in Southern Bavaria in April of 45 that everybody who surrendered would be spared: a dear late friend of mine, who was a German Army sergeant, was able to live through the war because of him, and he and his comrades held Gen. Patton and his soldiers in the highest regard throughout their lives.

My friend passed away three years ago, at the age of 95, peacefully in his sleep - as he, a deeply religious man, had always been praying for, and he was so grateful for the good life he had had (the only thing he was sorry for was that his wife turned out to be infertile).

Exactly! They all seem to be in “Lockstep”

That is my impression, too :-)

The power elites in politics, economy, education and culture all over the West are metaphorically singing “Hand in hand we stand” - and their friends (or maybe “poor relations”) in the media relentlessly sing their praises. A real system of communicating vessels.

How I, as a historian by training, would love to be a fly on the wall in one of those Bilderberg meetings (or on one of those institutions which are similar). I would be all ears ;-)

Interesting thought. Maybe we would have seen wars on a scale just as devastating.

Genocide too, surely. There were quite a lot of them in history, unfortunately.

Yes, I heard stories of some of those bat$#*+ crazy fanatics like the werewolves. They basically had to tie them to a tree and shoot them as a warning to others.

There were also people on the German side who performed heroically in the closing days. Don't remember his name but there was one general on the Eastern front who led hundreds of thousands of him men AND civilians in a retreat disguised as a repositioning to the western front so they could surrender to the Americans. Hitler was livid when informed about it because he preferred the discipline of Communism over the decadence of the west-- the reason his final offensive was in the Ardennes.

Yes, indeed. When everything descends into chaos, some go insane, while others become even more fortright in trying to save lives; their own and others’.

Unfortunately, I don’t know the general’s name whom you’ve been mentioning.

And yes, I’ve heard that was one of the reasons for Hitler, who by the time must have been completely insane (strangely, I never have heard of a book about Hitler’s mental aberrrance and the role which his drugs might have had in it. I think this is owed to the fact that no thorough autopsy had been, or could have been performed on the charred corpse).

Another was that transport in the West was easier, and that H.s greatest victory had been won there, in 1940 in the Western campaign.

" Most probably this mayor i of German heritage "

"most probably," doesn't cut it.

I'm most probably a hollywood millionaire, I'm sure you've seen me in my latest film

Finding a Stuttgart phone book with that name doesn't prove squat. With all the migration being encouraged in Europe today and especially after the war of English decline 70 years ago I'm sure you could find a Peabody surname in any city on the continent.

Thanks for you input.

You are very welcome :-)

Sorry to be such an insufferable know-it-all, but by training
I’m a German historian with a focus on the Middle Ages, i.e. on a period when, among other things, the custom of having family names began in Germany (around the 13th century for the bulk of the people, for nobles roughly two centuries earlier).

Thus, I thought I could give a little input on the matter...

Your penchant for civil debate is very admirable; we could use a lot more of that on this forum, as well as the obvious need for it in society as a whole. And must assuredly in the context of intellectual historical debate. Schön, Ihre Bekanntschaft zu machen

Yes says this is all about health like killing people with a different perspective.

When people fear their government their is tyranny.

When government fears the people there is liberty.

Vielen Dank Ihnen, und ich freue mich ebenfalls :-)

But with regard for all other Freepers, I think we ought to switch back to English now.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I really appreciate them :-)

Yes, I always try to do my very best in debates, whether on the Net or in real life, and I try to avoid being rude as much as I possibly can.

The sad thing about debates on the Net, fascinating as they can be, is that differences and controversies often escalate very quickly.
After all, one cannot see the other person, and since human communication depends on paralinguistic factors (tone, prosody), facial expressions and body language, anything one writes can come across as very rude or offensive, even if it was not meant to be. Misunderstandings, often fateful ones, can happen so easily...

Long speech, short sense, as we say in German: I’m always trying to keep it civil and reasonable :-)

So long :-)
