BART reopens bathroom shuttered for 20 years bringing ‘new era’ of rider relief

Restrooms in eight other underground stations in Oakland, San Francisco and Berkeley remain closed. While above-ground bathrooms quickly reopened, BART, citing federal guidance, said the underground bathrooms’ ventilation system could be a staging ground for an attack.

The new Powell Street bathroom features two all-gender stalls with a hand-washing sink located outside the bathroom. There are railings enclosing the toilets to ensure access for people with disabilities, and instead of rolled toilet paper, a metal box dispenses hand-sized squares of thin tissue.

The design is similar to modern airport restrooms, with no entrance door separating the facility from the station to prevent users from locking themselves in. However, the wide entrance combined with a lack of an entrance door does give the thousands of people passing by the restroom each day a direct line of sight into the stall, where they can glimpse the toilet user’s legs.

Countdown until the barbarians in the Bay area completely destroy these facilities.

The large downtown San Francisco train station had its elevator closed, due to being used as a urinal by all the homeless sitting on the walkway floors, two years back.

I had no fear of them, but it’s a disgusting way to remember one’s first time in a city.

I live near that area in Contra Costa County, or Coco County.
I recall when the public bathrooms closed.
Most of us presumed they were closed because too many dopers were locking themselves inside, shooting there drugs, then passing out for X number of hours, all the while inconveniencing lots of paying train riders.

The secondary problem was many of the escalators were sodden with ‘secretly’ released body fluids that were never fully cleaned up.
I drive now, so no need to use BART.
Taking all bets to see how long that reopened loo stays open.

Do you mean the Powell Street BART station?

This station has a long corridor, from the fare gates near the underground entrance to the Westfield shopping mall and past that on out to the exit at Fourth Street. It's an enclosed corridor and a couple of years ago (I haven't been there lately) you could count on seeing several homeless people along the way, just lying there. You had to be careful not to trip on them. I understand the need to get out of the elements, but honestly, these people needed to be in a proper shelter.

I remember when SF was more fun to shop in, not some sort of obstacle course where you needed to avoid the bums.

Ran into this problem at the MacArthur and West Oakland BART stations. Junkies liked to use the restrooms as private shooting galleries.

It’d be funny if they opened it up only to find Jimmy Hoffa.

Is it any wonder the SF 49ers moved its stadium to Santa Clara and Candlestick Park was totally destroyed.

No sane person (other than perhaps a lost, disoriented tourist) would ever use a restroom at a BART/Muni station along the Market Street corridor in San Francisco.

We’re talking about subway stations where the creepy street people shoot up fentanyl and smoke crack and meth on the steps. To use a restroom at one of those station would be like taking a swim through the sewer.

I predict a rise in AIDS cases will soon be traceable to the reopening of this restroom.

Was just there last year. It’s exactly the same, but with more homeless.

I remember when SF was fun too.

We moved out of San Jose and California about 1 1/2 years ago.

My daughter won tickets to see Hamilton for $10 each, so we went up to the city.

Homeless all over the place and I could see them shooting up.

I was so ready to move out of the Bay Area. I do not miss living there!
