I think ATF has the capability of reconstructing the serial numbers.Yes, they do. The technology is that when a SN is stamped or engraved, it alters the underlying metal. Filing the SN off does not remove the changed underlying metal. The ATF can reconstruct that SN by examining the alterations in that metal.

I wasn't questioning the presence of serial numbers. More interested in the integrity of the bore as a safe to use firearm. The serial numbers will provide traceability to the valid owners...assuming they weren't stolen at some point.
