Once upon a time, like just two years ago, a name change for Washington’s NFL team did not seem possible. Now, going forward, the Burgundy and Gold representing the nation’s capital will be known as the Washington Commanders.
“We are the Commanders,” team president Jason Wright said during the Wednesday reveal on NBC’s “Today Show.” He added that the name is something the team “could own and grow for the next 90 years.”
Co-owner and co-CEO Dan Snyder said in a statement: “As an organization, we are excited to rally and rise together as one under our new identity while paying homage to our local roots and what it means to represent the nation’s capital.”
“As we kick-off our 90th season, it is important for our organization and fans to pay tribute to our past traditions, history, legacy and the greats that came before us. We continue to honor and represent the Burgundy & Gold while forging a pathway to a new era in Washington. Today may mark the first day for the Washington Commanders, but we are and always will be Washington.”
The team released a video on the rebrand shortly after the announcement:
I will still call them The Washington Football Team.
Of course, now that they were successful in removing “Redskins”, they will go after the “Washington” next.

Reminds me of a scene in one of the Jay and Silent Bob movies where Jay is on camera declaring he is the “**** Commander!”
They need to repent and change it again to ComWOMYNders.
If “Redskins” is racist, isn’t “Commanders” representative of English colonists and therefore white supremacy?
Stupid name. But it’s no worse than the name change by the owners of the Cleveland baseball team, Guardians, ugh.
It seems to me they should have settled on the “Condomers”
If you notice...they didn’t give up the Redskin name. It’s still out there and ‘owned’. Within ten years, I think the league will regret all this stupidity, and the team brings Redskins back.
Well, they were on the right tract but as is typical with Washington, screwed it up. Clearly, if they’re representing Washington, D.C., they should have gone full authoritarian with something like “Dictators”, “Commissars”, even just “Elites”.

The only way I’d watch NFL football today is if the losing team at each game was executed. Then, they’d forget all about this wokeist pandering to the left and leftist causes. HIGH stakes matches with final outcomes. Plenty of room for 2nd, 3rd and recruit advancement, exciting plays and takedowns and a BIG finale post game....
FWIW Commander IS Brandons dogs name.
