Five months after the end of the US airlift stranded them in Afghanistan, some 156 dogs and 133 cats are finally on board an Il-76 chartered from a Russian transport company Aviacon Zitotrans, which departed Kabul on Sunday and is bound for Vancouver, Canada.

“The plane is a total beast, an [Ilyushin] 76-TD, basically built for flying into Siberia in the middle of winter, so we do not expect winter weather to cause any delays or disruptions,” said Charlotte Maxwell-Jones of the Kabul Small Animal Rescue (KSAR), the charity organizing the airlift.

The plane, tail number RA-76502, took off from Kabul on Sunday and is stopping over in Turkey and Iceland before ending up in British Columbia. The original flight plan had to be revised due to tensions between Russia and Ukraine, according to Maxwell-Jones.

They left US citizens and friends behind. Do you really think they care about dogs?

I imagine Putin saw an opportunity to poke brandon in the eye.

Putin is famously an animal lover but I doubt he had anything to do with this.

The Russians have a colourful term from the old Soviet days called “shit-eaters” i.e. complicit dupes in the west who re-broadcast their propaganda and make it more effective because they do it within the population of the ones the Russkies want to influence… Good news for the dogs though.

I was making a joke but, since you brought it up, do you think any international flights from Russia into a country like Afghanistan happen without Putin’s permission?

I doubt it, too. The article seems to suggest that the project was sponsored by SPCA International. They probably paid for it.

(The Russians, like the Chinese, seem to always be ‘in business’.)

A group called Kabul Small Animal Rescue, which looks like a pop-up charity run by an American named Charlotte Maxwell-Jones.

I have no idea re: Russian policy on Afghanistan/private flights. This appears to be a plane that was hired. What I do know is that Putin isn’t omnipresent.

I wasn’t suggesting that Putin personally signs off on every flight out of the country. But if you think that any private Russian company flies in and out of Russia without strict oversight of the Russian government (Putin) then you should hold onto that thought and nourish it. :)

Thank you Russia, for rescuing the animals, and doing the job our unelected, illegal occupant of Washington DC, should have done.
