Funny story from my past. When I was at USNA I went to Taiwan on a language study trip in ‘88.
One of the ROC Naval Academy midshipmen asked us why we kept calling our professor an “old goat”.
Professor/Teacher (sensei in Japanese) is pronounced lao shi where shi is pronounce with a flat one.
Old goat is lao shi where shi is pronounce with a sharp down tone inflection.
We’d been saying “old goat” for years and he’d never corrected us because he thought it was hilarious that we were going around telling everyone that.
Those were good times.
