Man Accused of Keeping Meth-Fed ‘Attack Squirrel’ Faces New Charges

The trial of a Limestone County, Alabama, man who allegedly kept a squirrel supplied with methamphetamine to make it attack people has been delayed.

Mickey Joel Paulk’s trial was scheduled to start Monday, but it was continued until Feb. 28, according to court documents.

Paulk faces charges for possession of a wild animal, stolen property and possession of a weapon by a felon. He was arrested in June 2019.

Paulk, 39, has other charges to deal with, too, according to court records.

He was arrested Dec. 23, 2021, on charges of chemical endangerment of a child and trafficking methamphetamine, as well as some drug and weapons charges. According to documents, Paulk was indicted back in June 2021 of the chemical endangerment charge and in January 2021 of the trafficking count.

A manhunt began for Paulk on June 18, 2019, when a drug bust in Athens turned up meth, ammunition and body armor.

Also found was a caged squirrel. Before authorities acted on a search warrant, they were told that Paulk fed meth to the animal to keep it aggressive. The sheriff’s office said it released the squirrel into a wooded area.

“There was no safe way to test the squirrel for meth,” Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely’s office said in a June 18, 2019, statement shortly after the bust. The squirrel garnered national fame when the story came to light.

Paulk released a video the day after the bust with a squirrel that he claimed was the same one released by sheriff’s deputies. He denied that he fed the squirrel meth.

I admit, if that guy appeared in my path, I might give him a wide berth!

@Just curious-what do you think of bird intelligence?"

Calling someone a bird – brains should be a complement. Birds get more horsepower out of a much smaller brain than do mammals. With flight you cannot afford a big brain but when you fly in 3-dimensional space you still have to be smart. Hence small and powerful brains.

I asked for two reasons...I went to a wedding a few years back for my boss’s daughter, and my boss was classmates with Irene Pepperberg of “Alex” the Gray Parrot of fame...I sat next to her at my dinner table, and it was really interesting to talk to her. I asked her what it was like sharing a house with a bird like that, and she said it was like living with a temperamental adolescent!

Then, I read a book a few years ago “The Genius of Birds”, and while the author was clearly a liberal, I found her book fascinating. I am an inveterate bird watcher, and one of the things I like about birds is that when they know you are there, they don’t fly away and you can watch them, and secondly...they watch us humans avidly.

Fascinating creatures. She said that a Chickadee can store the independent locations of around 6000 cached items of food in its territory!

“You’re theory that squirrels are similar to primates is pretty accurate. The first primate-like mammals are referred to as proto-primates. They were roughly similar to squirrels and tree shrews in size and appearance. It is a good example of convergent evolution where an arboreal existence exerts natural selection pressures to evolve similar physical attributes, intelligence, and behaviors.”

Does the fossil record support this?

Yes, the fossil record does support this. Early primates evolved from a squirrel-like ancestor. I did not say that primates evolved from squirrels.
