I Tested And Ranked The 7 "Most Popular" Frozen Pizzas, And I'll Just Say It — There's One Brand You Couldn't Pay Me To Eat Again If you need me, I'll be eating cold leftover pizza for the next...IDK, year.

I have distinct and incredibly fond memories of eating frozen pizza as a kid. It was generally an "every now and then treat." And then, WHAM. College happened, and suddenly frozen pizza went from "cute tradition" to "literal lifestyle." I know I'm not the only one here. And the number of brands out there?! Staggering.

Now that I'm a grown adult who actually cooks for a living, I'm usually too busy cooking up something not pizza-related...but TBH, I live for a frozen pizza every now and then. That said, the number of choices out there is overwhelming. Have I ever bought the same pizza twice? Truly unsure. Gotta try 'em all, right?

Common Standards:

• DiGiorno – Rising Crust Original Pepperoni

• Freschetta – Naturally Rising Crust Pepperoni

• Newman's Own – Uncured Pepperoni

• Tony's – Pepperoni

• Red Baron – Brick Oven Crust Pepperoni

House Brands:

• Trader Joe's – Wood Fired Naples Style Uncured Pepperoni

• Whole Foods 365 – Rising Crust Uncured Pepperoni

THE EXPERIMENT In order to be 100% fair here, I knew I had to do a blind taste-test. Bless my very, very willing partner for cooking up seven entire pizzas over the course of a day, and bless the fact that we'll have re-frozen frozen pizza for the next...IDK, year. (Side note: If you're reading this and we're friends, come over for pizza.)

Target has a house brand pizza that’s made in Italy and gets good reviews from the foodie crowd. I wonder if it’s coming out of the same factory as Trader Joe’s.

Binghamton N.Y., 1959, upper Chenango Street, one block before the old bridge that crossed the over to Rappaport’s. There was a Mom & Pop pizza shop on the South side of Chenango St. that servered the best pizza. They were Italian. Twenty-five cents a slice or a dollar-fifty for a big pie, ten cents for extra toppings. Used to stop there everyday on the way home from school. Thirty cents got yoy a large slice of pie and a bottle of Coke.
They had a beautiful daughter named Marie. She used to meet me down in the old orchard by the bridge. Holding hands and kissing in those days, we were only thirteen. When her parents found out we were an item Mama used to keep an eagle-eye on me. This was just when they started building the municipal pool down by the river. I used to live on Morgan street in the house that the carriage house in the back yard. Billy Joel’s “Only the Good Die Young” comes to mind.

the writer says get a thermometer, oven temps are wildly off.“

Yep good advice. The first thing a chef does upon taking over an unfamiliar kitchen is find the true temps of the ovens.

While there are better alternatives to frozen pizza, some people find enjoyment in the simple things too.

Especially if raised without prejudice of cheap foods. Maybe even raised in very modest budget homes and was a wonderful treat to get things like frozen pizza. And never lost that enjoyment. And appreciates careful spending.

Its nuts to do anything other than go to Costco or Sam’s Club and buy their pizza and take it home and eat it or freeze it. The tested choices are shite.

I got a thermometer and checked my oven, it’s a nice digital thermometer and my oven was a total of 3° F High. I was somewhat surprised as cake baking in the oven is hit-or-miss and never consistent. Maybe it’s humidity.

BTW bread making machines make a nice dough. But TBH a nice homemade thin crust alludes me, as does a simple old school poached egg, but I persist.

If I really want a thin-crust I’ll just order a Caesars thin crust, Which are just about perfect, and it’s nice to know that the CEO of Caesars Pizza contributes to good conservative causes, unlike other CEOs of other chain pizza joints.

I love anchovies, too. The family doesn’t. Usually we make two or three homemade pizzas, each with different toppings. I finally got everyone to accept anchovies, and this is how I did it:
Store bought pizza sauce, anchovy fillets, that minced garlic in oil in a jar(or chop up your own, fresh).
I chopped up the anchovies real fine, added them and the minced garlic to the sauce and mixed it up real good. I add those ingredients to taste, but be careful to not add too much. The anchovies add richness to the sauce, makes it a little thicker, and the fishiness and saltiness almost disappears.
My new go to sauce! I let everyone know the fishies were in there, and they couldn’t tell, but they could tell the difference in the overall taste.
They loved it.

One of my favorite meals, in my younger years, was a dollar pizza from the grocery store (Red Baron?) and a packet of Stouffers creamed chipped beef dumped on top of the pizza. Eat it with a knife and fork. Of course, I only ate this when the wife was away (cause she wouldn't eat this garbage).

I like Stouffers creamed chipped beef on toast, like their stuffed peppers too with lashings of hot sauce :)

I haven’t bought a DiGiorno pizza since I found they used machine screws as a topping on one I bought.

That's why I moved to the thin crust style on DiGiorno. The rising crust was just too doughy.

Made the Di Giorno last night. Followed instructions exactly. When timer went off, I just turned the oven off and set timer for 5 minutes. Outer crust was flakey, like a croissant ....
