Ronnie Wood is a great guitarist, but like I said he wasn’t Mick Taylor great. He should have stuck w/ Rod instead of joining the Stones. To me, he had a better sound there w/out being drowned out by Keith.
Mandolin Wind is one of my favorite songs. And i am old.
I bought that album when it was released and played it at buddies apartment. We listened to that song, but could not identify the instrument.
I looked at the song list on the album. ‘It’s a Mandolin’
‘No way how’d you know that so quick?
‘The name of the song is ‘mandolin wind’. I’m pretty sure that’s what is being played.
And can we finally give some respect to Kenny Jones? This unfairly maligned, absolute gift of a drummer was handed the BIGGEST shoes to fill when Moonie died. Kenny took the gig, The Who carried on. Yes, the next two 'Ooo albums weren't Quadrophenia, but they didn't suck like the entire Springsteen catalog.
More importantly, Kenny gave The Who life. While he didn't make it past 1985 as The Who's drummer, it is arguable that The Who would have packed it in after Live Aid. That means no Quadrophenia live tour(s), no Concert for New York. And so on.
Besides, Kenny is explosive in this video.
The haters can go sod off...I love Kenny's drumming.
Here's Kenney, Rod, and Ronnie just last year (Rod's voice just isn't right for one reason or another):
For once the RRHOF got it right when they inducted them.
That’s Ronnie Lane on vocals.
It was Ronnie Wood, not Rod Stewart or Ronnie Lane, who sang the lead vocal for this song. Lane and Stewart were at odds at the time. Stewart did not think the song was up to his standards, although both he and Lane recorded lead vocals for it. Their producer, Glyn Johns, suggested Wood give it a try, and that's the version that was used for the album, which was Faces' last studio album. Lane left the group after Ooh La La was released and the group disbanded after their 1974 tour.
I liked Rod best as singer for the Jeff Beck Group. Beck-ola and Truth are awesome.
Interesting. I’ve never heard that album. The Youtube video which features Lane is a regular in my video playlist. I’m familiar with the song from the Rushmore soundtrack too and that looks like it’s probably Woods version. They do sound very similar.

The version i'm accustomed to is the one from the album, which is wood. I also hear the song a lot on the several "radio" stations I have on my Pandora: Van Morrison, Faces, Chris stapleton, Hipster cocktail, Faces, James Hunter, all of those stations play the Wood version.
Either way it is a fun song,

That video is one of my all time favorites. One of the few reasons to youtube anything.
Also a true story: A few years back I was at an open air bar near the beach in Delray Beach, bough 4 overpriced beers for about $38, so I also felt robbed. The talent was a Rod Stewart impersonator (did he have a brother) who apparently played the local clubs. Oh, my wife wanted to dance on the bar but I had to calm her down. I guess we had all the fun :)
That same guy used to play at the old McCarthy’s in Tequesta. He looked and sounded just like him. Good times.
Hopefully he still has it, I have tickets for this summer at SPAC, which has been postponed for 2 years along with the Doobies 50th reunion tour.
Long ago, when “Maggie May” was on the charts, I heard Casey Kasem liken Rod’s voice to “a velvet bag filled with gravel.” I’m not sure I’ve ever heard a better description.
