More burlesque than operatic, where even the exaggerations become exaggerated.
The songs alone. Bat Out of Hell the album, like other "operatic rock" albums like The Wall, 2112, Tommy, etc was a story. It was actually inspired by the musical Neverland.
Absolutely operatic rock. His songs- the Steinman ones at least- far surpass mere pop, or even rock. They tell entire stories in grand style. Bat Out of Hell, Paradise by the Dashboard Light, I Would Do Anything for Love etc.
His final grandiose sone was actually called “Going All the Way Is Just the Start- A Song in Six Movements.”
He and Steinman were an incredible pairing that made amazing art.
