KRASNOILSK, Ukraine (AP) — Dressed as goats, bears, oxen and cranes, many Ukrainians ring in the new year in the colorful rituals of the Malanka holiday.
Malanka, which draws on pagan folk tales, marks the new year according to the Julian calendar, meaning it falls on Jan. 13-14.
In the festivities, celebrants go from house to house, where the dwellers offer them food.

Sounds like good ole’ fashion fun to me! Sorry AP... the whole “trying to paint Ukranians as less than evolved” thing doesn’t work for me. Sounds like a fun block party where pancakes and other yummies are served.
LOL, I wouldn't doubt if there was more then alcohol involved, or maybe they drank to much alcohol their whole life.
Dude in blackface will never escape it. It will come back to haunt him all throughout his political life. /s
Did the AP report this to win sympathy for, or to disparage the people of Ukraine. Knowing how the AP is 100% political one has to wonder.
Could be any trailer park in Arkansas on a Saturday night.
That was my initial reaction, but it being AP, perhaps they think paganism is a positive, and intend it to be anti-Putin.
Hey, after being cooped up all through a Russian winter, I would imagine anyone get a little loopy and look forward to spring.
A LOT.
Honestly, it’s far more tame than Mardi Gras.
Wait, they are taking a timeout from their all hands to the pump construction of road obstacles and battle positions?
Ethnic neo-paganism is a big thing these days, among all sorts of groups.
shouldn’t they be like, I don’t know, like defending their country or something? Damned pagans...
Big Bump, FRiend!
yeah, came to mind after I posted.
Malanka!
There was a sufficient number “Old Believers” in the Soviet Union’s hintelrands that the Communists sought essentially annihilate them causing many to go underground in their beliefs. Soviet ‘progressive’ propaganda coupled with Russian Orthodox hierachy cast them as obstructive elements to the New Soviet Man, Homo Novus, and heretics.
All this came from my Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox friends and family. And attending their weddings, funerals and Easter services.
All the ‘folk tales’ with Baba Yaga and shamans, etc. stem from the Old Believers.
The Ukrainian government is absolutely corrupt. No one knows that better than Brandon, if he has any memory that is intact. If Putin has a plan for a bloodless take over, I say let him have it. The Ukraine does not warrant the risk of a nuclear war.
The ru$$ians who run the gab.ai website - I haven’t visited the site in several years but I imagine they are still singing this tune - like to honk a lot about how Vlad wants to make Ru$$ia the center of the religious universe, restoring roman catholicism and making Ru$$ia the new Rome. Not joking. Mr K (not the one on this forum) has heard talk show hosts mention this: It’s not a new idea. They are going to restore the “one true religion” and make Ru$$ia the head of this religion. Everybody else can go die.
Try to wrap your head around that for a minute. This is one of the reasons we Americans deserve annihilation: Because we’ve left the church behind and we don’t live clean anymore, this according to Vlad who is CLEARLY not interested in Jesus, Nob, or any other deity, or any other thing that you might consider religious.
As someone else in this thread observed, this is a tactic to demonize the Ukrainians and make it seem like attacking them is a good idea.
When I started reading on Gab that Ru$$ia is the true home of Christianity and blah-de-blah, I laughed at first.
What interests this guy, obviously a tyrant who loves only control over other people, about Christianity and Catholicism? Hm. Let me think about that for a minute.
I’m sure most catholics aren’t falling for this line, although the extent to which they have fallen for other lines makes them a great target. The RC church still has lots of money and property (and they exhort us to live poor so we can get to heaven, don’t you know?) which would of course make a gang boss like Vlad drool.
Catholicism being taken over by Ru$$ian tyrants: Sure, why not? Especially in the case of European catholics, those who wish to keep to their faith without persecution might see it as an option.
The story is as silly as one condemning US churches for participating in Halloween.
