I believe you have hit on the real problem with this offshore wind farm idea.
I live in an ocean side town in Mass. and can see the yearly damage done to my town by winter Nor'easters.(Hurricanes are fewer but more damaging)
In order to stand up to these storms, an incredible amount of money will have to be spent to keep these windmills in operation out in the ocean. Way more money than it is being spent ashore, to maintaining a shore bound losing money operation. -Tom
