French actor Gaspard Ulliel, best known for playing Hannibal Lecter in "Hannibal Rising," has died at the age of 37 after a skiing accident in southeastern France.

The accident happened on Tuesday at 4 p.m. local time (10 a.m ET) at the La Rosière ski resort in the Alpine department of Savoie, according to a Wednesday statement from Albertville prosecutor's office.

After Ulliel left the top of a blue ski run, he collided with another skier and both fell to the ground, the statement said. The other skier didn't suffer any injuries.

When the emergency team arrived at the scene, Ulliel was lying still in the snow, unconscious, according to the statement.

He was airlifted to the nearby Grenoble University Hospital Center where his death was announced Wednesday afternoon.

"I was just thinking about how dangerous skiing can be today."

Sonny Bono, Michael Kennedy, Michael Schumacher, and Gaspard Ulliel in skiing accidents.

Helicopter crashes have killed race car drivers. (!)

I witnessed three deaths on ski slopes: one in Austria, one in Switzerland, and one in France. No one wore a helmet in those days, but running into a tree or a lift pylon at speed could easily result in death. running into another skier usually did not produce a death.

I doubt the a helmet would have made a difference in the three accidents that I witnessed, but a collision between two skiers, a helmet may have saved a life. I skied with members of the U.S. Ski team, in a training mode for instructor certification. Their skills were so much beyond mine that it defies description. Most amateur skiers frequently ski beyond their skill level. I certainly did so.

The videographer guy at Mt Hood Meadows in the early 80’s was one legged. You paid the fee, and he would follow you down any slope, run, or trail with the camcorder on his shoulder.

He was quite impressive.

During the Vietnam War, Fitzsimmons Hospital in Aurora, CO was the designated Army hospital for amputees. They had a special skiing program for amputees. One of my squad leaders was evacuated to Fitzsimmons after losing one of his legs after stepping on a bobby trap. He became a very good skier using out riggers with his ski poles.

Re: Did he know Claudine Longet?

Her lift pass was revoked in 1976.

She married her defense lawyer after the trial.

According to Wiki, they are still together, and still live in Aspen.
