That’s right, an appendectomy is one of the prerequisites for everyone — including children — to live in Villas Las Estrellas, one of two civilian settlements on the frozen continent where people can reside for years instead of weeks or months, the BBC reported.
Located in Chile’s Frei base on King George Island, the outpost only boasts 100 inhabitants max, predominantly researchers and military personnel. However, those with longer-term contracts often bring their entire families — sans appendixes — to the Spartan settlement, which consists of a post office, a small school, a bank and other rudimentary
And these aren’t the only precautions people take while living in Villas Las Estrellas. As temperatures can plummet below -100 degrees Fahrenheit, citizens are required to stay indoors or risk freezing to death.
“This winter we could not leave our home for weeks,”
The base even has internet access, although it’s reserved for the school’s three computers.

I could endure the -100, but no wifi? I’m staying home.
“I dunno why we always have fresh McNuggets when new arrivals get here.”
- parts is parts, what part of the chicken is a chicken nugget.
Lol, when the weather gets really bad for months, soon we serves us up some long pork…
The editor capitalized “Spartan”. Are the ancients out there taking appendixes when they find people living on their colonized land, or something...?

I’d like to hear the family meetings when the spouses and kids get the news. “Oh, by the way, we’re going to Antarctica for the next two years. You’ll love it. I’ve already scheduled your appendectomies for Thursday.”
” The nearest hospital is 625 miles away from the northernmost tip of the island, which can spell bad news for anyone suffering from appendicitis — an affliction that requires immediate surgery to prevent it from becoming life-threatening. “

If you want to join the Ridiculous Six you have to remove your own right eye with a spoon.
Pshaw!
Leonid Rogozov was the only doctor at a Soviet era antarctic research station when his own appendix became inflamed and was in danger of bursting. Weather precluded evacuation. So he performed an appendectomy on himself. Piece of cake! People are just too dang entitled these days.
We’ll get 20 below here, a couple of years ago 34 below.
Do they also have to have a sex change just in case they catch sudden transexualism and don’t have a doctor near?
I used to live where for 2+ weeks of the year the daily HIGH temperature was -25. It was - 40 or colder every night.
The worst part was the static electricity. The cold you could dress against. There was NO escaping the unbelievably strong ZAP. You’d get so charged up your eyes water.
I've had one experience with -40F and one with -30F,both in the small town of Val d'Or,Quebec. It's about 200 miles north of Montreal.
Edmonton AB. They just came out of a deep freeze like that last week. It’s even colder up Fort MacMurray, Slave Lakes way.
Alaska’s cold, but not as cold. BTDTGTS.
Then again, it's summer time down there.
