I would think something like that too. Smother it with it’s own exhaust. Also, that might help contain the gas, which will continue to come off after it’s extinguished...
To: Red Badger
Can’t they just nuke it? The Soviets did that sort of thing all the time.

The Soviets created the problem!........................

As a flow tester working on the Mesa gas fields in Wyoming, they burn off the gas through a stack. Just releasing the gas without burning it is considered a environmental hazard
Putting the fire out doesn’t stop the danger of the gas flowing.they need to stop that somehow

Its not that big of a hole. Build a dome over it to smother the fire. Then collect and process the natural gas and sell it.

Yes but they also fixed similar problems with nukes. There are at least 2 cases in the 60’s in which the Soviets detonated smallish underground nukes to put out natural gas fires.
To: Red Badger
Seems to me they could smother the fire by covering the hole with a huge tarp I think that they should cast the world's largest iron grate and then construct the world's largest teapot. Sorry Chester West Virginia.

Yeah, the Hellmouth was a constant source of problems for Buffy.

The volume of the crater is approximately 165,000 cubic meters, assuming an average depth of 60 meters. If you can pump in a
lot of nitrogen or carbon dioxide quickly under a cover as you draw the cover across it you may quench the fire. Then you pour on the water to make sure it does not reignite.
This depends heavily on how much heat is rising from the soil/rocks after the fire is quenched - can you design a cover that will last long enough to quench the fire and not be destroyed from heat from hot soil/rocks?
An interesting engineering problem for sure.
