Tech PING! Thinking I need a camera security system. Has anyone looked at them? Thoughts? I want a stand alone camera system with night vision and recording capacity. Something that would work with my wifi? Something that works in the dark? (we live in the woods)

Is there such a duck?

BZZT NOT!!! NEVER buy a system that phones home to China, NEVER!!

I agree. It all really depends on what you really want to do with a security system. Some people really need remote access because they are often not on site but still need to see what’s going on, but I highly recommend not putting your sytem on the internet. Also, I can tell you that enabling wifi for wifi cameras are a security risk too. I once witnessed someone actively trying to hack a system through it’s wifi, and this system was not connected to any router, which means it was being done through the open wifi for the cameras.

Super simple and it works excellent...I use 8 cameras and the install was super easy...No wiring, no calling contractors etc...

[[They can record in full color even at night]]

Unpossible. Everyone knows that objects lose their color at night (check,it yourself, look into a pitch black basement, yup... no colors present) /s

Check out the Lorex Fusion systems. They can do it all! Spend some bucks on PTZ cams as well.

Btw, a normal sized home really only needs 3 or 4 cameras, 2 in front, 1 in back etc...I needed 8 for specific purposes and most people can uses 3 or 4 cams and be very effective.

>You’ll have to sling a lot of wires around your home, though.

Once upon a time security system guys were pretty good at that. Not sure if that’s still true.

Yep...And where my compound is it gets very dark outside and I was surprised just how good the night vision is. With a porch light burning nearby, it’s super good.

I think 6 would do it for me. There’s a couple places inside I’d like to cover.

That is the way to go if you need to do any active security surveillance. You can pan around and zoom in on a target if you need to see what’s really going on. Not as useful at night though.

Even wireless cameras need shore power if you expect to have a 24/7 live feed that you can later review.

So you may not need to run coax from the camera to the DVR anymore, but you still need to run a low-voltage power wire to each camera.

There are motion-triggered cameras that are battery/solar powered, but they only record when activated.

We bought about a dozen of wyze cams when they were the cheapest security cams available. They are used with a phone app and can be programmed to alert you when they detect motion. We prefer the ones with “panning”, they will actually follow people that they detect in the picture. We also put inexpensive micro-SD cards in them that record a couple of days of video before cycling back over the recording. We also use cheap enclosures on the ones we use outside.

The WyzeCams do not yet require any type of paid subscription that we are aware of.

If we are watching television using our Amazon fireTV sticks you can just say into the remote “show front door” or whatever camera you want to see if you are getting an alert on your phone.

We also have three “Ring cameras”, but they cost us $10 a month and the service is a constantly changing joke. Unfortunately they cost us many $100s of dollars. We also have an older system with high definition cameras, a controller, hard drive, and also an app that we bought at Sam's club. It is much harder to set up because cables for every camera have to go back to the controller. Very good cameras, good controller, but very expensive, and not as convenient to set up.

Unfortunately, most of the WyzeCams are not currently on sale. Here is the cheapest. It is not the type we have, and I don't know if there are outdoor enclosures available. It is $20 if you clip the 20% off coupon on the Amazon Ad.

Not that difficult to setup a vpn into your own server with your audio/video.
