I don’t recall the play but this article details the controversial call which kept the Dolphins unbeaten that season.
“That was the worst call ever,” Lurtsema said. “Without that, they wouldn’t have made history. I’ve told (Griese) that before, ‘I never roughed you, you faker.’ ”
I believe the Dolphins -- despite being undefeated -- were actually UNDERDOGS in the Super Bowl against Washington (not Minnesota).
Wow...interesting. I do seem to recall the Dolphins saying the Viking game was the key game for them that season.
The ref said Benchwarmer Bob hit the quarterback? You know that call has to be wrong.
Another funny story from the article (which was quite good):
"“I was down in Naples, Fla., at a golf tournament once and there were a bunch of ’72 Dolphins there,” Lurtsema said. “Nick Buoniconti (a hall of fame linebacker) comes up to me and says that you’re as important as anybody for the Dolphins going undefeated in 1972. So he had me sign this ball. So there’s an autographed ball with all the undefeated Dolphins on it and one Bob Lurtsema.”"
