For the life of me I can’t understand the appeal of hunting and killing charismatic fauna like wolves. Deer, elk etc, sure, provided you actually eat them, many Americans’ primary source of meat. A farmer or rancher could understandably have to kill wolves on occasion for livestock protection, although I don’t by any means endorse the idea that ranchers have a right to exterminate any wildlife that’s a threat to their business. Setting out to kill wolves for sport for its own sake is perverse.
Agree. If they kill some cattle then comp the rancher. I’ve been a hunter all my life but these endangered animals, predators or not, should be protected.

What???
+1
I must admit I had to look up “Fauna”.

Really?? Just figure that every one of those cows standing out in the field is a $1K bill. How many of those do I deserve to lose? Do you have a bunch of $1K bills to let rot in the fields or to feed to wolves?
There is a reason we exterminated wolves in the first place.
Or is it just okay because the feral govt will offset my losses by giving me a tiny fraction of my money that they took from me at the barrel of a gun?
How about this? You want wolves, fine. You slap a radio collar on it and pay for the tracking. It kills my animals, you buy it at whatever price I set, out of your pocket.
Says the dandyxx.
You don't like to hunt don't do it.
I'd love to see camping, surrounded by a 15 pack of wolves, and then get your opinion on killing wolves.
dandy man? indeed.

Wolves are not like Disney portrays them. They are cold blooded killers that would happily kill you just for fun gut eat you alive first if they were actually were hungry. There is a very good reason that they were largely exterminated.
Well sorry you're fkn stupid then, and don't understand nature and the relationship between man - particularly farmers - and apex predators.
If you're ignorant and "can't understand" something then why not just STFU and learn?
This is nothing out of “sport”. In AK, moose calf crops in some areas hover @ 10% as a consequence of excessive wolf and bear populations. Wolves are down and out killing machines.

“charismatic fauna like wolves.”
Say what??!!
Wolves are NOT charismatic unless one believes animals are as displayed by Disney or in the Ice Age movies.
Wolves kill whatever they can kill to eat. That could be your livestock, your pets and yes YOU are on the menu.
Wolves live, travel and hunt in packs meaning they can take down a bull elk and a full grown bison.
Being pack hunters they can destroy a herd of cattle in short order.
First they take the calves.
Every female calf killed is a decade of income down the drain because they never grow to replace themselves 10 times.
Every male calf killed is a steer that won’t make it to market (your table).
They also kill adult cattle which are kept for breeding purposes because they are THE BEST IN THE HERD. That decreases the QUALITY of the meat that does make it to your table.
Simple economics dictated the elimination of the wolf in the US.
The wolves now in the US are the much larger and more vicious CANADIAN wolf.
You obviously are neither a hunter, rancher, live in a rural or mountain community, have never been surrounded by a pack of wolves, don’t know the history of our nation, or a combination thereof. You want to reintroduce wolves into the wild than they are fair game. They are ruining our Elk herds and costing ranchers lots of money. A few more lives will lo be lost for this romantic adventure. Turn the wild places back a few centuries and if you do that the only people that survived the wild were the hunters, ranchers, and mountain men. City orphans that do not have a clue are cannon fodder for the wilderness. The wolves just put the teeth back into nature and nature has its own unforgiving laws because nature kills without any judgment or remorse, it just kills any romantic fool that ventures out into the sea or wild places unprepared. A pack of coyotes can be just as dangerous to people alone, but they mostly will still avoid most people. Wolves do not and a pack will take down anyone out there alone. So my family and friends will take any wolves that stray onto our property or go after our livelihood. Government fools will not control the wolf population but the hunter and rancher will. Shut up about it if you live in a concrete jungle.
Wolves kill for the thrill.
Not just for food
