The World’s First Small Modular Nuclear Reactor Is Sending Power to the Grid
Interesting Engineering ^ | 4 Jan 2022 | Chris Young

China connected its first small modular nuclear reactor to its power grid, making it the first country in the world to draw power from such a machine, a report from Bloomberg reveals.

China Huaneng Group Co.'s 200-megawatt unit 1 reactor at Shidao Bay is connected to the grid in the Shandong province. The company is also developing a second reactor, which is scheduled to go into full operation next year following tests.

The 200-megawatt small modular reactor (SMR) is roughly a fifth of the size of China's first proprietary reactor design, called Hualong One. Its small size allows for greater scalability as well as reduced operations and deployment costs.

The new modular nuclear reactor is the world's first pebble-bed modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactor. Instead of heating up water, it heats helium to produce energy. The machine is designed to quickly shut down if an error occurs.

In case of a leak, folks for miles around will sound like chipmunks.

You can’t power modern civilization on wind and solar. Remember this the next time you see Green extremists pushing for more of those, and trying to shut down coal and gas fired power generation.

I am willing to bet that the pork filled Infrastructure Bill does not have a penny allocated to bringing the US SMR’s to market.

I’m sure it’s only bird choppers and bird cookers.
Gen IV reactors should be being built right now, but no.

In conjunction with that, we have a ton of work to do on our electrical distribution system. Especially here on the East Coast where our lines are old.
I work in distribution and substations, and I try to push every young guy to enter the industry. We’re undermanned and many are older.

Helium is lighter than air.

Found out last week that those birdchopper blades have an internal scaffolding made from BALSA WOOD clear-cut from the Amazon Rainforest.

You can’t make this stuff up.

A guy I went to engineering school with, just retired after a long career in transmission and distribution with GA Power / Southern Company. We could probably use more of him.

They aren’t replacing guys at utility companies until someone has already retired.
So no time to convey 30 years of experience.

I am getting ready to retire from Nuclear Power after 37 years.

I got into Nuclear Power because realized its benefits to the environment and safety.

I was an early environmental activities. Although was never militant.

I always realized that the economy must go on or the environment will suffer.

People struggling to survive will do what is necessary to survive, the environment be damned.

A strong economy will do more for the environment than all of the Green Peace activist ever could.

You will know the Chinese have acheived their goal of replacing America as the dominant world power when they announce they have openned their first sales office for SMRs in this country. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tesla is the first company to start installing them here.
