Toyota passed G.M. in world sales in 2009...now this. I remember when japanese cars were ridiculed and called "rice burners"....unions ruined the American car companies.

I’m surprised it didn’t happen earlier.
Wonder where all those Toyota’s were made?
GM sucks. They should have been allowed to die in 2008.

Most American cars are light years behind so many foreign cars. Very disappointing.
Go to certain countries and you’ll see F150s and Chargers, even in Iraq.
But you will Toyota’s EVERYWHERE.
“Very disappointing.”
I agree. I was a “GM guy”. I want GM to be good. I want to believe that Americans still care enough to engineer quality products. A string of lousy cars concluding with a 2002 Bonneville that would break while it was parked in my driveway soured me. Traded the Bonneville in on a Camry, never looked back.
Unfortunately the beancounters have decided that it’s more profitable to sell trucks disguised as mommy-mobiles than actual cars. Since they have ceded the car market away to the foreign companies, it’s not surprising at all.
Toyota makes about ~2 million cars in the US a year. They have facilities in Indiana, Kentucky, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Virginia, Missouri, and Tennessee. Tundra is made here in Texas.
Most Toyotas are made in California, Ohio or San Antonio. Do not know if it still true, but the Toyota Camry used to be the car made in the US with the highest percentage of US sourced parts.
Every Toyota pick up in the World is made in Texas.
“I’m surprised it didn’t happen earlier”
Agreed. I’ve owned both and IMO there is little comparison is overall quality.
Yep, I'm looking at the Tacoma v. the F150 or the Chevy/GM models., perhaps in a couple years when the market straightens out.
GM is now Government Motors ...
20 years ago our company would not buy Jap vehicles for company cars. So now they buy fords, made from parts from ALL over.
Actually the plant is in Kentucky not Ohio.
Also, maybe the trucks are out of Texas now but my 2009 tacoma was manufactured in Carlsbad cali.
I’ve owned several GM cars, but none post-bankruptcy. It’s not shocking to me that they’ve lost a huge amount of market share. For one thing, they build a tiny fraction of the makes and models that they did 15-20 years ago. I’m not just talking about them ditching Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Saturn, each of which had a full range of vehicles. Look what’s happened to Buick... they don’t even make cars anymore, just SUVs. Chevy has dramatically cut down its lineup, and I rarely see a new Cadillac on the road despite that fact that GM seems to still pump a lot of money into that brand.
“GM sucks. They should have been allowed to die in 2008.”
Amen. I was stupid enough to keep purchasing their POS trash during the 70s & 80s and finally got a Honda. Gasp, couldn’t believe that one could get a car that actually had parts that fit, no rattles, and was reliable.
Today? I’d get a ‘Vette, but nothing else from GM.
The new Tacomas are from San Antonio I believe
I’d *love* to buy an American car again. But simple fact that my Mitushibshi and my Honda and best friend’s Toyota ALL went well over 300K miles with hardly a problem besides one burned out clutch between all three.
This is the new standard.
If I have to do anything more than gas, oil, and tires in 300K, it is junk
Hell, I’ll compromise- I’ll buy a GM or a Ford, but I expect a 20 year 250K bumper to bumper, no questions asked warranty. Not unreasonable if the Japanese can do it.
