“...unions ruined the American car companies.”

CLEARLY the case. Just surprised it took so long for Americans to figure it out. I bought my first Japanese car 40 years ago...and that was it! Never bought a UAW car since.

It’s surprising to me that Toyota manages to stay in business, since they obviously don’t believe in “planned obsolescence.”

Their vehicles last forever.

The only American brand vehicle I have ever owned was a ‘45 Dodge 1/2 ton truck.

Everything else has been US made Japanese brand vehicles.

I purchased a 32” Honda snowblower in ‘96 for $2,800. Used it for 24 years and sold it for $900. Purchased the new 32” Honda with electric (battery start) and turning brakes.

Are they the trucks that have the bumpers that rust off in a handful of years, yea, great quality GM.

Sadly, so many people wanted GM to be good, or at least to change their ways. But they never really did. From the days my parents got ripped off by GM through today, GM kept cutting corners and building crappy cars. GM has very few cars to even consider in terms of quality construction, just cranking out the low-end dreck.

Toyota isn’t perfect, but there are almost no bad vehicles in their line-up. Sure, some are better than others, but unlike GM, with a Toyota you don’t expect your vehicle to sit in your garage and fall apart.

Both great but in different classes.

Every Toyota pick up in the World is made in Texas.

Only the ones sold in the U.S. Toyota makes pickups all over the world for other markets.

I’ve owned several GM cars. Two I purchased new. Neither (nor the 2 others) got anywhere near 100,000 miles without requiring costly (multi-thousand dollar) non-routine repairs.

I just bought my 4th Camry. The first one, a 2006, had 241,000 miles when I gave it to my daughter. She drove it 22,000 more before trading it in. My wife’s 2009 just reached 250,000 last month. I just traded-in my 2012 with 233,000 on it for the new 2022.

The ‘06 needed a $250 water pump about 6 years ago. Then ‘09 needed a $95 top motor mount about 4 years ago.

Other than that, tires, brakes, gas, oil, wiper blades.....
Obviously I will never buy another American car. Neither will my kids. One has a Camry, the other has a Rav-4

My 1st was a 1980 toyota Carolla SR5. Had 250k miles on it got in a bad wreck and tore up the front end pretty good. The bodyshops wouldn’t touch it so I sold it to a body and paint guy. A few months later a coworker told me he saw it running around his town on a regular basis. SMH They don’t quit.

““American cars are light years behind so many foreign cars

I think what you see are the hidden costs of the unions. From a design standpoint, do you use a plastic that will last (maybe) 10 years without cracking, versus a more expensive one that will last 30 years? Same for metals.

It’s all hidden, but the ‘American’ companies simply cannot have it both ways - they have to cut somewhere to make up for the huge added costs of unions - so they cut where you won’t see it.

Toyota products are the most dependable vehicles on the market and hold their resale value much better.

I haven’t bought commie American made vehicles since I owned my first 1976 Datsun 280Z.

My family prefers not to support union workers whose union dues support communist Democrat political contributions 99% of the time.

My family’s favorite manufacturers ranked by our own personal proven quality and dependability are, Toyota/Lexus, Honda/Acura and SAAB.

“The ‘06 needed a $250 water pump about 6 years ago.”

Did you actually get it replaced for $250, or was that just the part cost? (or perhaps you did it yourself) My experience with Front Wheel Drives are that water pumps are buried in the engine and quite sporty to reach.
