“Already working pretty well with military aircraft and drones.”
In largely empty skies, and don’t we still have people operating those things remotely? (Coincidentally, that’s how Joe Kennedy was killed in WWII.)
Back in the 1980s people thought that machine translation was at hand. Thirty years later, we still have no equipment that can translate even a children’s book from Japanese to English without human intervention.
Flying cars, self-driving cars...I don’t think we are even close. We’ll have five-hundred-car pileups with three hundred fatalities, and we won’t even be able to figure out what went wrong.
My brother and I were hitchhiking out to Hybla Valley Airport shortly after WWII, and we were picked up and given a sightseeing ride up to Wheeling, WV and back in a Bonanza by Arthur Godfrey. Only time I’ve been in one. Looking out the window and chatting with the UNICOM operator in Mayaquez, PR, I saw a Bonanza land wheels up. When the plane stopped, I heard a voice on the UNICOM say, “Well, I really f**ked that one up!” I did own a Cessna 175 for a number of years.
Cessna 170 series are solid aircraft. Haven’t flown one, though. So- was that THE Arthur Godfrey who gave you a ride in his Bonanza? Very cool.
Yes, it was THE Arthur Godfrey (he had his name painted on the side of his car), but come to think about it, it may have been a Navion. I don’t remember the butterfly tail so I may never have been in one. I did see one land wheels up though.
