After a fire ripped through Boulder County Thursday, displacing thousands of residents and burning more than 500 homes, Gov. Jared Polis, Brig. Gen. Laura Clellan, Adjutant General of Colorado, and Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle boarded a National Guard helicopter to survey the damage. CPR photojournalist Hart Van Denburg accompanied them.

It's nothing to joke about. Did disaster assistance years ago for a similar event, only in that one three people died. Two while they were running down the street trying to escape.

Looking at those photos, I'm reminded of the sole house in the 1993 Laguna Beach fire that didn't burn. Fine Homebuilding Magazine did a story about that house and how the owners and builders incorporated a lot of fire prevention design techniques that obviously worked. Mass built tract homes don't use those techniques which aren't all that expensive, but out of reach of the average tract home subdivision.

It’s awful. My wife’s sister and her daughter lost everything but the clothes on their backs and one car. Nothing left on their lot but a hollowed out basement t foundation.

The originating web site has far more pictures and references to the politicians than information about the fire.

Horrible situation in Colorado. Last I read there are no deaths but 2 missing. Given the speed of the wind and density of houses it’s amazing there wasn’t great loss of life.

There’s a video on Twitter of a shed/small barn burning that looks to be the point of origin. It’s on land owned by a group called twelve tribes. Fire Dept has ruled out the downed power line theory.

Insulated Concrete Homes with metal roofing would not have burned. The grass fires could have been far less of a problem if a bulldozer had buried the grasses under a thin layer of soil. As soon as the drought started the bulldozers could have been busy at work. There have been throughout history a problem of stick built buildings which burned down. Steel, concrete, and brick are better than wood.

I almost hope they are still in shock, so it sinks in slowly. I know I am too materialistic because I’m getting old and the things in my house mean more than they probably should. To lose them all .... every darn treasure .... agony.

I really wish them well, for the pittance that’s worth.

Dear God, that's horrible. Glad to learn they're ok, that's the most important thing. Are they getting help/housing assistance right now?

I remember the 1993 Luguna Beach fire and the house that didn’t burn. It was owned by an engineer born in Viet Nam and wife born in Germany and they had done all kinds of things to make sure that it wouldn’t burn specifically if a fire rolled through.
