In 1983, when I was a sophomore at CU Boulder, my fraternity set up a pledge kidnapping breakfast event with a sorority. I was assigned Dan Reeve’s daughter, Dana. Aside from the stupidity of the entire idea, I had a hell of a time trying to convince her, at her dorm, at 6am, that I was there to take her to a planned breakfast. Everything eventually worked out, but I got a good earful and insight from her about what it was like being the (extremely cute) daughter of an NFL football coach! Thinking of her today and her sad loss.

Sophomore or junior year in high school I went to visit my sister in Garland and she said the Cowboys were coming in that night and lets go see them come of the plane. I was about 5-7 and 145 lbs dripping wet playing linebacker for the high school and fancied myself a ball player. The boys came right past us as they went to the terminal, they were absolute giant’s. I hollered out great game guy’s and Bob Lilly stopped shook my hand and said thank you. As silly as it sounds I almost cried, he was and will always be my favorite football player. Damn I got misty eyed again. MR COWBOY!

Do/did you live in Colorado by chance? He was in our church, too, in Cherry Creek and was treated exactly as you said! He was just one of the community.

"Guess we all gotta take our turn."

Yep...We have all been sentenced to life without parole. Some of our sentences are just longer than others.

A good football fan would have taken note of how the fortunes of the Denver Broncos changed over the course of Elway's career.

They couldn't win a Super Bowl when he was at the top of his game. That's because a Denver offense built around a mobile quarterback couldn't match up against a team with a dominant pass rush and fast linebackers who could chase Elway down and minimize his mobility. The Giants schooled the whole NFL on that during Super Bowl XXI. They even scored two points on a safety when Elway was sacked in the end zone late in the first half of the game.

A decade later, Denver won back-to-back championships when Elway was fading to the point where he was almost an inconsequential part of their offense. They had a dominant running game, and as Elway aged he had become more of a traditional pocket passer of the NFC mold from the 1980s.

I can almost visualize the play I saw that ended Dan’s playing career. ... While running the ball for a gain, his knee was violently impacted by an opponent’s helmet during the tackle.

Dan was a fan favorite. RIP
