In 1861-1862, California had such a rainy winter that 4000 people died as a result of massive flooding. Whole towns were washed away.
Great [California] Flood of 1862
Uh, maybe design and build a lot more reservoirs, for starters?
Only in California can you have both a drought AND a flood at the same time!
“What do you propose to do with the rest of it?”
Build new reservoirs.
$2.7 billion bond fund to build water reservoirs sits idle in California
It’s been seven years since drought-wracked California raked in $2.7 billion in bond funds that promised construction of reservoirs to capture excess water runoff during winters.

When was the last reservoir built in California?
New Melons Dam north of Sonora has the last water project built in California. It was completed in 1980.
Yep. Nice snow all along the East Bay Hills and Mt. Hamilton a few days ago.
“No matter how many BMWs roar up and down 101.” — That made me laugh. I suppose you can also add “No matter how many Teslas silently whoosh up and down 101.” these days.
Mudslides at 11.
But when it pours, man it pours.
“They should have built more storage in the past to collect water from a season like this”
As far as I know there is but a single river, of dozens descending the west slope of the Sierras, that is not already dammed.
One.
Yes, one can build more dams higher up on the rivers already dammed, but the resource is still finite.
And it is necessary to keep the rivers alive. With actual water flowing through them. The current federal mandate is that 1/2 the water goes to the sea in order to preserve the river ecosystem.
I fully support that allocation.
Of the half that is allocated to human use, 78% goes to farming and 22% to cities/domestic.
Farmers want to change the gross allocation to reduce the amount of water kept in the rivers.
So they can export the product and make big bucks.
2% of CA almonds are consumed in CA. 18% is US domestic consumption.
80% is international export.
I do not support the destruction of American rivers in order to grow somebody else’s food.
“Every reservoir will be topped off, full.”
Then shipped right to LA right after they sponge Owen’s Valley.

“Forget it Jake, it’s Chinatown.”
I hate anyone, of any persuasion, who for any reason, revels in bad news for their fellow citizens. I swear some people practically celebrate when bad things happen when the other party is in power. Curse them.
If memory serves, 80% of the rain falls in the north and 80% of all water is consumed in the south.

Yeah but that’s not supposed to count, right? Cuz they’re filling up on electrons from solar panels. Oh wait...takes 3 weeks to fill up one Tesla with the average home panel output...assuming no overcast.
But but...could that mean that...gasp...they’re getting the energy from Power Plants!? Oh Noze. Can’t be. That would cause...Climate Change (say it with a big echo).
So maybe all those Red Model S’s gliding past the San Antonio exit and the Mothership Googleplex are part of the problem...please say it ain’t so! Now what’ll we do?!
Let’s not tell them that the answer is to add a couple more units to the Palo Verde Generating Station and pipe in more go-juice from Arizona.
At least Noah Cross was making money doing that.
It’s called, wait for it...Climate Change
I wouldnt want to lose 5 bucks. No bet.
Been raining all week.
We COULD start by cancelling the premature retirement of Diablo Canyon, too.
AND restart the SMUD Rancho Seco nuke.
"It never rains in Sunny California--it's a cloudburst!"
“And it is necessary to keep the rivers alive. With actual water flowing through them. The current federal mandate is that 1/2 the water goes to the sea in order to preserve the river ecosystem.”
Great! Fantastic! Reduce the take from the Colorado 50% that goes to the sh*thole called California!
All for it! That way the eco system can be restored in Mexico since that water will be allowed to make the Colorado run to the gulf again.
