I saw that special advertised and thought to myself Madden departed this life a few years back. Honestly thought it was a post-departure tribute. So . . . this news takes me by surprise.

My son just texted me about Madden. I was thinking about him just an hour ago, wondering how he was.
A great coach, especially for the Raiders of that era. Plenty of headcases on those teams. ;-)
Best color commentator to sit/stand behind a mic.

NFL is truly dead and gone now.
Madden was entertaining beyond “just a game”. His mannerisms alone, could watch all day.

Damn! FOX had an
excellent documentary on him Saturday:
All Madden. I caught only the last 45 minutes, I believe it was 90 minutes in total. Now I wonder when it was filmed because he was seated in front of a big screen, watching the various tributes and then would make comments periodically. I loved when he and Pat Summerall (sp) called games. Really, that was when football was worth watching. No colors, just 'teams', no freaking kneeling. Players had class (some did).
RIP Mr. Madden. You kept my interest in the sport alive.

Arguably the greatest sports analyst of all time. The pro games were and are almost clinical and devoid of characters. He brought characters and made the games fun largely thru his enthusiasm.

That’s what I remember about him — his fear of flying. TV viewers were once given a tour of the gigantic bus or RV that shuttled him from one arena to another. And “doink.” And he immortalized the turducken.

Madden’s approaching the Pearly Gates, and he hears the Voice of God welcoming him. It sounds exactly like John Facenda.
One of the last links to when I watched the NFL is gone, but never forgotten. RIP Mr. Madden.

The thing I liked about him is he knew what 22 guys had done on the play prior, and could and would comment knowledgeably about what they had just done/screwed up to contribute to the play. Probably 29 guys if you count the zebras.
