Here’s How a Tesla Model S Holds Up After 424,000 Miles

The tried-and-true gasoline engine has been around for a long time, and it likely will hang around for a long time. In the past half-century alone, automakers have seemingly turned reliability into a science, building million-mile cars with relative ease. With the popularization of electric cars on the rise, however, a new dawn of mileage records and durability might soon be on the horizon.

With Tesla being the most popular EV-only brand in the world right now, it's only natural to hear about some high-mileage Teslas popping up out there. But what does one actually look like up close and personal? One YouTuber's got answers for us: Braden Carlson.

Carlson recently got his hands on a friend's 2015 Tesla Model S 70D. The black-on-black electric sedan was recently purchased from its original owner who used the car for Uber service since it was brand new. During the past six years, the Tesla racked up a rather astonishing 424,302 miles—that's around 71,000 miles per year—and it's still going strong.

The only major piece of service that the Model S has undergone, according to Carlson, was a battery replacement. The Tesla previously received a new battery under warranty at around 250,000 miles, meaning that the car now has 180,000 on its current battery pack. Since its pack replacement, the car's original range of 240 miles has dropped to between 180 and 200 miles on a full charge, meaning a loss of as much as 25 percent.

All of the car's other major components seem to be in good shape, which is fairly impressive for a car with its odometer reading. Carlson says that all of the car's electronics still work too, except for the driver's side rear window actuator.

NYC to LA in 50 Hours in a Tesla

Interesting interview of one of the drivers that went from NYC to LA in 50 hours.

The same guy made it in 31 hours years ago in a gas car. He used Tesla's supercharger network and for about $100 in electricity (this is during the Trump years).

He did note that they drove in the dead of winter and didn't use their heater at all to save the battery. It was c.o.l.d.

Otherwise a completely doable trip.

That’s a lot of miles, and even more kilometers. :^)

Reportedly, Tesla’s contracted with Hyundai to ship Tesla vehicles from Shanghai to Europe; also, Hyundai’s EV market share was 3rd place last year, now they’re not in the top 5 (and they make some nice EVs, btw). [source: The Electric Viking]

Must be weird to have a car that accelerate that fast while sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on the 405.

Reminds me of the high end car commercials...They’ll do a shot of a luxury car driving down an empty coast highway or some beautiful rural open road....

They never show them sitting in bumper to bumper traffic, where most spend 98 percent of their time, surrounded by cars that look just like theirs!☺

"Someone ought to do a “Gumball Rally” using only electric powered cars. I wonder how many weeks it will take to complete the trip from NYC to LA?"

It's a great idea. So 2800 miles give or take.

It just takes planning. An 85-kwh Model S with twin chargers, without any rest breaks other than charging? 280 on full charge, full charge takes 5 hours but you probably would not full charge except once for some sleep.

But hold off on that, let's calculate it on the rough basics -- 5 hours on the road and 5 hours off the road -- just on mileage since Tesla mileage sweet spot on cruising is between 65-70mph.

So that breaks down 2800 miles to 10, 10-hour sets. 100 hours is 4.16 days.

So now the question is, what can be gained by shorter charge times, faster speeds, drafting the vehicle vs autopilot vs FSDC.

3 days would be like a 600-mile/24-hour penalty, so that's where the prize money should be.

"3 days would be like a 600-mile/24-hour penalty, so that's where the prize money should be."

Here's the current record:

"In July 2019, Roy's record was beaten by a family team of Robin Jedi Thomsen, and her parents Lars Thomsen and Betty Legler with a time of 48 hours 10 minutes driving westbound for 2,835 miles (4,562 km) in a Long-Range Rear-Wheel-Drive Tesla Model 3 between 12–14 July 2019."

So very soon we will be down to shaving minutes off that instead of hours.

So maybe a prize target is 45 hours. Or go for 44 hours and call it "2022/44".

Pretty useless. The 91 is our local parking lot. I avoid freeway driving when I can.

Yep..The 91 went belly up years ago. When they started paving over everything east of Saddleback, the 91 became an unbearable choke point.
