YOu’re going to find lower than advertised mileage if you speed. Highway mileage presumes 55 MPH. Above that, mileage decreases. My hybrid gets 47 at 55, but 42 at 70.

I’m buying! Just as soon as I find a spare $40,000 in the couch cushions.

What does MPGe mean?

________

Miles Per Gallon Equivalent. Equivalent electrical energy usage which give you the heat equivalent to burning a gallon of gasoline. Compares electrical energy to the thermal properties of Gasoline. Since it takes a lot more heat to generate electrical energy and then to turn it back to heat, than just to burn gasoline, this was surely created by somebody who loves EV to the degree that wants to show it in best light, even if it is misleading! (lying). It shows EV’s as being a lot more efficient as they really are.
If you really want fair comparison, to get equivalent MPG, you should divide MPGe by about 2.5 or 3x.

EVs are awesome... if you want to easy mechanism thru which to control/monitor the movements of everyone.

and when you charge is when you get ‘software updates’

good luck...

My bigger questions are 1. How long does it take to recharge a battery? 2. How long do the batteries last before needing to be replaced? How much does it cost to replace them?

Thanks to you all...fascinating, informative thread.
I think EV’s are here to stay and they will only get better. The support will be lagging but it will get figured out. No way will I be getting one.

Looks like Hyundai went all in with Hybrid/Plug-ins. (Looks like others are going that way too)
The VOLT is dead, long live the Volt.

I have a 2017 Ioniq Blue Drive Hybrid...EPA 59 MPG. This will probably be my last car.
MPGs sux in the winter.(40+MPGs suck?) in the summer I get, at times, better than 59mpg (upwards of 65mpg @ approx 65-70mph)

Thanks again

I had a Honda Del Sol for about 18 years that would get about 40 miles per gallon on long trips. To fill it up would only take about 10 minutes from the time I pulled into the gas station till I paid and left the gas station.

So what is the wait time for a full charge under the same conditions?

What is the cost per mile for the electricity to recharge them and how many locations have the excess capacity needed to charge a significant number of electric vehicles? We know that California is short on capacity.

I have only one question with regards to EVs.

What exactly is the “problem” they are trying to solve here?

Pretty much as expected...

For the most part a joke...

For the EV to be anything remotely competitive to combustion for a non niche use, MINIMAL, and I do mean MINIMAL, requirement is 300 (realistically should be closer to 350-400) miles at highway speed with a 10 minute or less recharge.

Anything less is a commuter/second vehicle at most.

I don’t travel all the time, but I do travel, and far more than 300 miles at a pop. One of these vehicles, even the longest range of them would be absolutely useless. As a daily commuter, sure, as my only vehicle hell no.

Hell a GOLF CART could serve as my daily commuter honestly, but if I am going to pay 20-30k for a vehicle, not going to buy something that can’t fill all my needs.

First big problem is RANGE...

Next big issue is Recharge Time...

Third big problem is RECHARGE ACCESS...

And the forth and largest problem, is an electrical grid that can support it all..

EV mainstream advocates, like to ignore most of these issues.... and number 4, is a problem that is astronomical in scope and cost. (So is 3 for that matter, but 4 is the GIGANTIC one)_

Work is being done on one and two... three and especially 4, are not even on the radar..

300 Million cars, estimates are about 4000 KWH per car per year needed to power each of them...

1,200,000,000,000KWH to power them all...

To put that in context, the current total US Electrical production is:

3,902,000,000,000KWH per year

Or in other words, assuming ZERO growth in the number of cars on the road (not likely) the US Energy grid would need to produce another 30% more than it does today TOTAL.

Most people honestly don’t care how their transportation is powered, they care that it serves their needs and works... EV is a LONG LONG way from filling the general need adequately.

Could it someday, certainly anything can be done, but anytime soon? And will it really be any benefit if it does?

Time will tell I suppose.
