EVs are awesome... if you want to easy mechanism thru which to control/monitor the movements of everyone.

and when you charge is when you get ‘software updates’

good luck...

That’s great, and so I guess we’ve answered the question of how an EV can be more efficient in stop and go traffic.

“Recharge time after max range drive?”

There you go... I would like to see a graph of the recharge times back to 100% again.

Santa Ana winds. Santa Anna winds only happened at the Alamo when the Mexican dictator ate too many beans!😉

That’s because Gators are awesome...

From prehistoric times it has been thus.

My bigger questions are 1. How long does it take to recharge a battery? 2. How long do the batteries last before needing to be replaced? How much does it cost to replace them?

I looked at a Nissan Leaf for my grandson (high school 10 mile round trip daily commute) but while they’re dirt cheap due to battery deterioration, a new battery would be way too much dough. Went with an old Saturn from Florida owned by a grandma.

Daughter has had one for near 3 years. They drive it all up and down the east coast. Charging is an issue but not impossible to deal with. Eats tires but I think some of it is she neglects to keep them up to the 45 psi.

“Eats tires but I think some of it is she neglects to keep them up to the 45 psi.”

You know, tires is also an issue for one of my friends. They are expensive and wear quickly. In his case that’s his fault, he swapped the OEM wheels for larger diameter ones with thinner rubber and that has meant quicker wear.

“2. How long do the batteries last before needing to be replaced?”

My friend who owned a 2014 Model S was still getting 80% charge when he traded it in on a new model last year. Replacement would be in the $5,000 to $7,000 range. Don’t fall for the “$22,000” story that’s floating around, that is in Finland and must be from taxes.

Try dividing the price of the car by the per-mile energy cost savings, to see what EV odometer reading amounts to break-even with ICE equivalent, and at what mile count the vehicle is free.

At current costs around here, a loaded Tesla 3 or Cybertruck will pay for itself by ~400,000 miles.

Thanks to you all...fascinating, informative thread.
I think EV’s are here to stay and they will only get better. The support will be lagging but it will get figured out. No way will I be getting one.

Looks like Hyundai went all in with Hybrid/Plug-ins. (Looks like others are going that way too)
The VOLT is dead, long live the Volt.

I have a 2017 Ioniq Blue Drive Hybrid...EPA 59 MPG. This will probably be my last car.
MPGs sux in the winter.(40+MPGs suck?) in the summer I get, at times, better than 59mpg (upwards of 65mpg @ approx 65-70mph)

Thanks again

That’s not the reason. Why should one pay for extra batteries? All my electric hand tools are the same brand so I can swap the two batteries I own between them.

Looks like that’s parts + labor. Don’t know how that breaks down between the two. Musk quotes prices even lower than $5k - $7k range. Tesla has a China battery factory that just came online that may be reducing costs. I haven’t run across anyone who has actually replaced the battery.
