The incident took place around 11:45 a.m. near the intersection of Victory and Laurel Canyon boulevards, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, at a Burlington department store that’s part of a chain formerly known as Burlington Coat Factory.

Police initially received a call about an assault with a deadly weapon, then received additional calls indicating there was a shooting in progress...

One of the people who died was the suspect, who was shot and killed by police, according to LAPD.

The second person was a 14-year-old girl, who was found later, according to LAPD Assistant Chief Dominic Choi

When officers were shooting at the suspect, one of the officer’s rounds penetrated a wall that was behind the suspect. Beyond that wall was a dressing room, and when officers searched the dressing room, they found the girl had been fatally struck by the gunfire...

Additionally, the woman who was assaulted by the suspect had moderate-to-serious injuries to her head, arms and face, police said. She was taken to a trauma center. It wasn’t immediately known if she’d been shot.

Police said they found a heavy metal cable lock near the suspect, but it was not yet clear what weapon he used when assaultimg the woman.

Any CCL holder would be facing a Grand Jury with a strong likelihood of indictments for manslaughter at a minimum. I’m tired of cops being held to different standards than the people they are sworn to protect and serve.

Is it plausible that the wall behind the target appeared solid and not as just a partition for a changing room? We know cops make mistakes like the rest of us. Some “mistakes” none of us would make.

Under all the circumstances, perhaps most of us would have done the same. BUT, from this article, it is difficult to have even a general “feel” for what the circumstances actually were. Thus, I’ll withhold judgment.

They get more leeway operating in their official capacity. They can legally fire their weapons in many, many more circumstances than a ccw.

in this situation as a cop, he may very well still have justification for firing despite not knowing what was behind thar wall. A CCW carrier doing tge same thing probably would not get nearly as much support for doing the same thing.

In fairness, a ccw person may also be carrying a different kind of load, one that is designed not to penetrate as far into a wall/through a wall. For this very reason.

They will excuse this because police officer did the shooting.

That didn't work for Kim Potter.

Government employees should not be held to a lower standard than private citizens.

The only problem with that is the common citizen does not have to make life-or-death, split-second decisions. A police officer does. Cases like this will make more folks not even consider a career in law enforcement. That will not bode well for law and order in the future.

“That didn’t work for Kim Potter.”

About damned time.

But I hope the judge has some discretion in sentencing because the idiot she killed would still be alive had he complied with the lawful orders of the cops on the scene.

I’d sentence her to time served and probation. There’s no chance of her reoffending and no public interest is served by putting her in prison.

You’re missing the context which I was clear about.

Kim Potter’s mistake of “grabbing the wrong weapon” is far, far different than firing at a suspect and the round going through a wall you have no earthly ability to see behind.

One can doubt her her excuse. One can also put blame on her for terrible training and making a fatal error, if you believe her when she said she truly grabbed the wrong weapon she wanted.

With the cop who’s round that either misses the perp, or hits the perp and goes through them, through a wall, he’s trying to stop a violent criminal, the shooting isn’t accidental, there’s no intent to harm anyone else around him, there’s no hint of anyone else behind him. Assuming a person is behind every wall, cops would never be able to neutralize a criminal. Especially if they aren’t making noise. And for anyone who claims an innocent person could be behind every wall, so could another bad guy.

In short Potters accident is personal error in execution of her duties. In this case there is no personal error like Potters’, its totally coincidental and random. The cop made followed standard engagement protocols under the stressful circumstances to end the situation.

I was wondering about that, I thought cops carried hollow points, which you wouldn’t think would penetrate a wall and kill somebody, but maybe they were carrying FMJ, which would most likely penetrate to that degree. But we don’t know how dense that wall was, either. It was designed for privacy, not to stop bullets.

A 9mm will pass through multiple layers of sheet rock an still retain more than enough energy to kill.

Sure but a hollow point? But then again, I have to remind myself that dressing room walls are not meant to stop bullets.
Poor girl probably never knew what hit her.

“Sure but a hollow point?”

Yep. The sheet rock loads up the cavity preventing reliable expansion. And even if it did expand as designed there’s still anywhere from 350 to 450 foot pounds of energy to deal with.

That will punch through 1/4 dry wall like it’s not even there.

In a fire fight many things happen fast you can’t control everything it’s a shame the girl was hit only one to blame is the low life criminal who caused the event.
Keep the in prison for full term.
