But it's what his sister Kasinal Cashe White said that brought tears to my eyes:

“I’m just glad that he’s receiving this honor. The fact that he happens to be African American is just a side note, because actually if you want to say anything, you’d say he was green, because he was Army,” she said.

It is the duty of EVERY member of the armed services, from private/seaman/airman up to admiral/general, to salute a MOH recipient who is in uniform wearing the MOH decoration or ribbon.

A Salute to you SFC Cashe!

She gets it. I was angry when I heard about this decision. Never in my life have I given a Rat’s Ass of the color of any recipient of the Medal of Honor. They are all equal to me, and it cheapens it and turns it into a political tool to even have his race mentioned.

That’s what I remember most about my 8 years in the Army: we were all green, and we had each other’s backs.

The demographics for Air Defense Artillery back then was roughly a third each Black, Hispanic, and White. Except for a few malcontents, race was never an issue.

A popular misconception. It is a courtesy well earned but, not a requirement to salute a MOH recipient unless they are entitled to a salute based on officer rank.

I would, and have, initiated a salute to a MOH recipient when I recognized the ribbon on their uniform.

That’s not according to the AFI I read years ago.

Now I’ve been retired for 25 years, so things might have changed, but if I ever saw a troop, even an officer, not render a salute outside to a MOH wearer, I would voice my E-8 opinion to them very loudly.
