Has secession ever succeeded?

One of my freshmen classmates at MIT (from Bronx Science, NYC) didn’t know West Virginia was a state - he thought it was just a region of Virginia.

Most people know it’s a state, but few know it seceded from VA. It’s a story that’s not often told.

After the Cold War ended, the Warsaw Pack was broken, and the Soviet Union gone, Czechoslovakia between two separate countries; the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Peaceful and friendly, even to this day.

It would seem that Maine’s separation from Mass. was definitely a secession—Mainers no longer wanted to be governed by Boston.

Maine had grievances, but statehood was voted down several times. It was only after the Massachusetts legislature voted to let Maine go that Maine voters approved statehood. Because of federal law, Maine’s ships benefited from Maine being part of Massachusetts, and it was only after the law was changed that separation became popular enough to be voted up.

The Constitution says that states can’t be formed from other states.

West Virginia only happened because of the Civil War.

Not that it was an actual civil war, considering no groups were fighting for control of the government. One government simply invaded the other to force them back into the Union.

And, WV is proof. New States cannot be made from existing States without a very specific process. By admitting WV as a State without that process, Lincoln and friends admitted that Virginia was not part of the US, that the Confederate States WERE a separate country, and not simply wayward States participating in some minor insurrection or something.

Short of that, the feds will have NO PROBLEM in bringing Texas to their knees, if they choose to. This is NOT 1861, after all.

I highly doubt it'll be that easy. If Texas goes, you'll likely have other States follow, especially if FedGov tries to bring down the hammer. Not to mention quite a lot of patriots all over the country that'll likely find a war against Texas/flyover as not something they support, and they'll use that as an excuse to start some house cleaning on the Commies in all levels of government.

I’m just happy that Orange County seceded from LA County in 1889. Leaders of the movement to secede included Southern secessionists who moved west after the War Between the States. Thanks to their accomplishments, today we have a lot more freedom on this side of the Orange Curtain than in LA County, where WuFlu restrictions remain in force.

I don’t believe you’ll see the current regime’s federal troops guaranteeing any successionist state’s viability like the West Virginians had.

Clearly Lincoln believed in secession when it went his way.

Freedom isn’t something that is handed to you by politicians. It’s something you grab in spite of them.

The Declaration of Independence, which articulates *OUR* right to Independence, says it is a God given right for people to separate if they wish.

What General Sherman was involved in was not secession, it was an armed rebellion.

You cannot "rebel" when your own founding document Declares a right to Independence. You may not be familiar with it, but it is called "The Declaration of Independence."

The CSA attempted to overthrow the legitimate government of the USA.

This is either a lie or ignorance speaking. Only someone who does not know what they are talking about, or someone who is deliberately lying would say such a thing.

The Southern states never attempted to seize the government of the USA.

Yes, I forgot to include Czechoslovakia on the list.
Last night I saw something on BookTV with Arthur Herman, whose ancestors came from Norway. He mentioned how Norway was put under Sweden in 1815 but finally became independent in 1905.
Iceland used to be under Denmark but I think they became independent peacefully. In the late 1950 Egypt, Syria and Yemen united as the United Arab Republic. I don’t think it really functioned as a single country and soon broke up, but Egypt continued to use the name United Arab Republic for itself for a while afterwards.
