Rep. Thomas Massie: Has secession ever succeeded?

@RepThomasMassie

Has secession ever succeeded?

One of my freshmen classmates at MIT (from Bronx Science, NYC) didn’t know West Virginia was a state - he thought it was just a region of Virginia.

Most people know it’s a state, but few know it seceded from VA. It’s a story that’s not often told.

I'm for the self-determination of states which is the formal UN (spit) accepted practice.

Insights welcome.

I read on here all the time that Texas is going to secede but nobody really seems to have an explanation how it’s actually going to happen. Especially since only a trivial percentage of elected officials there seem to be promoting it.

I don’t believe you’ll see the current regime’s federal troops guaranteeing any successionist state’s viability like the West Virginians had.

West Virginia seceded from the CFA, or broke off.

But not really, because it was already in the USA.

Secession doesn’t work here.

Apples and oranges and orangutans.

Look at the split up of the Soviet Union.

There was a video of the map of Europe over the past 1,000 years. Borders were constantly changing.

Maybe California goes back to Mexico.

Well, since secession involves the dissolution of a region from its association with a higher-level or controlling authority, then you could say the splitting off of the United States from Great Britain was a form of secession and it WAS and STILL is, highly successful.

But Biden’s going to fix that.

The United States of America successfully seceded from the UK.

1776 was NOT a revolutionary war. We never attempted to unseat the king. We only wanted to self govern in our land. That is a secession.

Early on Virginia allowed Kentucky to become a separate state, likewise North Carolina with respect to Tennessee, and some decades later Maine separated from Massachusetts.

In modern times East Pakistan broke away and became Bangladesh, Singapore separated from Malaysia, Eritrea from Ethiopia, and South Sudan from Sudan. On the other hand Biafra's attempt to secede from Nigeria was crushed violently. Western Sahara has been unable to make good its independence from Morocco. The former British Somaliland has tried to escape from Somalia but I think no countries have recognized it as independent.

Of course the Soviet Union dissolved into its constituent republics and the former Yugoslavia broke up (with a little violence in the case of Slovenia, a lot more in the cases of Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo).

Several Northern states were going to secede during the War of 1812 because the War with the Brits was inconveniencing their business and trade. The Hartford Convention was a traitorous endeavor and was only stopped by the news that Andrew Jackson had defeated the British at New Orleans.

The upper peninsula of Michigan has talked about breaking away from Michigan, too.

The United States has always been in favor of self-determination. Let a people - or a region - decide its own fate. The United States even lectures other countries about this. Self-determination for all people, everywhere!

But there is one exception to this. Better not try it in the United States. Because if you do, Billy Sherman will come knocking at your door. And there’d be a huge army with him.

Secession happens frequently. Just since 1990 we have seen the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Sudan break up.
