First 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350 Prototype Up for Grabs
the drive ^

Posted on 12/13/2021 11:18:48 AM PST by mylife

In July of last year, the Shelby GT350 “Ken Miles R-Model” Mustang Prototype sold for a hammer price of $3.5 million ($3.85 million with fees) at auction in Indianapolis, making it the most expensive Ford Mustang ever sold. For reasons unknown, the buyer has decided to flip it, and the iconic Mustang will be up for sale once again, this time at Mecum’s Kissimmee, Florida auction in January.

This GT350R broke the record for world’s priciest Mustang that had been set by the 1968 Ford Mustang GT driven by Steve McQueen in the film Bullitt. It has an incredible pedigree; a resume only topped by Carroll Shelby himself. And that history will undoubtedly result in the auction house raking in big bucks all over again. The only question is whether it will beat its own record this time.

My 65 was balck with red interior, 4 speed top loader and 289 Hi-Pro, 2:71 rear end. I could get rubber in all 4 gears until the left side motor mount broke. Then I had to baby it off the line

Sold it for $500 dollars in 1981.

Hi.

Now Derby Lane is a staging area for Amazon. There’s still liquor in the front and poker in the rear, but the greyhounds are history.

Sad.

“...“buyers premium”. What a scam.”

other than thievery, no other way to describe it.

I once had to drive about 100 miles in a super thick fog.

At one point I taped over my headlights so only enough light to see the road got through

Why doesn’t Ford reuse that body on a new model. I wouldn’t care if it had weak 4 cylinder, or even electric. Is there just not enough room for all the anti-pollution crap?

The modern Shelby GT350 Heritage edition is finished in the same color and striping as the original. It's a great looking ride, and sounds like no other.

Alas, 2020 was its last year and with that so is the standard transmission on a Mustang.

In the early 1970’s I restored a 1966 GT350, Wimbledon White with the blue stripes. I sold it a few years later for $12,500 so I could get married. Every time I watch a collection car auction and one comes across the block, my wife gets real nervous since she knows I’m thinking if I had that car today it would be worth about 10 times what I sold it for and I have to figure out real hard if my wife is worth 10 times of my bride.... 🤣🤣🤣

My 2nd ex-wife had a ‘73 Charger that came with (non-functional) electric windows. As a workaround someone had removed the door panels to manually move each window up and down. If you’ve never seen an inner door frame just imagine a giant cheese grater

Every ride in it was an adventure. ;’}

"had to baby it off the line."

No one taught you back then, or now to chain down the left side of the block?

The bidders know about the buyer’s premium when bidding, so it’s no surprise.

It’s a car no one is going to drive. Owning it is only for vanity and bragging rights with your other uber-rich buddies; at least until the wife says to get rid of it.

I’d disagree with that. It’s a helluva track car for someone who does those events, and is properly trained/experienced.

Modern track cars can easily outperform this Mustang. This car would be lucky to not finish last in a race today if you set aside cars that crashed or had mechanical failures.
