It’s a flop. Will be a $100+ million write off.
You can’t sell a traditional musical to a younger audience raised on rap.
Exactly!
Would be like trying to re-make "The Best Years of Our Lives" with servicemen returning from Afghanistan.
The fellow with the hook hands would be replaced with a trannie. The "Dana Andrews" character would be openly gay. The "Frederic March" character would be a drug addict.
At the end of the film, the "Dana Andrews" character would have to give a speech in which he denounces American exceptionalism and inveighs against interventions in foreign conflicts.
Sickening to contemplate!
Regards,
All I want to know is, does some Jet or Shark still say, “Ooobly-oo, daddy-o”?
What is this “television” that you speak of?🤔
I can think of a hundred movies from the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.....that we don’t need to remake. Fistful of Dollars doesn’t need to be remade. The Odd Couple doesn’t need to be remade. Funny Girl and Whats Up Doc don’t need a remake.
Anything with that shrike in it doesn't need to be remade.
Are the Jets and the Sharks being replaced by the Crips and the Bloods?
It was hard to stop laughing for about 30 minutes given our family’s heritage which is similar to perhaps millions of American households where conservatives have been integrated from many cultures.
The sheer stupidity and ignorance of the left is on full display as they continue to cast and segregate individuals based on skin color and language. As conservatives, a fantastic heritage, multi lingual capabilities and appearance do not equate to an affinity to leftist racist tyranny. It is particularly intolerable to those who the left target and single out, then designate as incapable due to the nature of their ethnic background.
The endless gift of cringeworthy, ignoramus WTF mouth-frothing social justice commentary spewed from questionable cavities of the left only serve to bring more of those seeking true freedom and recognition for the content of their character to our cause.
Saw it on Friday. It was terrific - in many ways superior to the original, IMO. (And I am musician).
Spielberg brings a new and fresh perspective.
Singing is amazing - esp. Maria - an unknown who won the part out of 30,000 who auditioned.
If you like killings, there are three in Spielberg’s movie. In Shakespeare there are suicides but no knifings or shots in the back.
I have not been to the movies in almost 20 years- Hollywood will not get $0.01 of my money if i can help it. I was considering breaking that streak to see WSS- loved the original.
Then i stumbled upon a 60 minute preview show about the movie last week- all woke/BLM BS. How Rita Moreno was discriminated against all the time as a young actor, how they would only hire Puerto Ricans to play certain roles in the movie (despite the fact they allow blacks to play roles such as Ariel in the live version of the Little Mermaid), blah-blah-blah.
Finally they had that race predator sunny hostin talking crap and i said, “fuhgetaboutit- not going to see it.”
“eagerly awaited”
I eagerly await the day when Agitation and Propaganda (AP) has been thrown into the dustbin of history.
But Vito got whacked anyway. Woke
would’ve been he’d be made a capo.
Of course the irony of my post is while they said they would only hire Puerto Ricans for certain roles in the movie, the girl who play Maria is half Colombian/half Polish and 0% PR
“You can’t sell a traditional musical to a younger audience raised on rap.”
I agree—I think some money people got suckered by some fast talking marketing types.
Who exactly is the market for this film?
Old? They are still terrified of Covid.
Young? Couldn’t care less about this movie and never heard of the original.
Thumbs down for the business decision.
In Shakespeare there are suicides but no knifings or shots in the back.
Tybalt?
It’s a musical. Operas have soldiers singing while they are killing each other.
The 1961 film was completely inadequate. Flatly directed and badly acted. This version is an improvement in every way.
This ian’t an update or a revision. It’s still WSS set at the same time as the original.
