Agreed. That’s even more important than term limits, in my opinion.
And from what I’ve read, one reason the 17th A was enacted was that state legislatures sometimes became deadlocked, and so sent no senator to DC. That is easily fixed by requiring a run-off between the top two contenders, with the state’s governor having a tie-breaking vote.
Then there was the problem of corruption, with senate candidates buying the votes of state legislators. That’s no worse than the lobbyists (and their money) who pollute the process now.
There should be an Amendment to allow State Legislatures or the voters of a state to recall a Senator who is not doing what the state wants.
The primary reason the 17th was adopted was the rise of urban populations and Democratic-controlled political centers that challenged rural/non-urban Republican domination of legislatures, and who then used progressive “reforms” (direct democracy, supposed anti-corruption, etc.) to administer the amendment.
DeBlasio is nothing new.
