And combine that with how connected connected her in laws are if she even attempted to divorce him there was a very good chance at least those few years ago they would have just found a way to have her declared as an unfit mother take her kids away from her. Not to mention she would be pretty much an outcast from asked from most anyone she ever knew. Because they would see her as the greater sinner. In all the words this is essentially scarlet letter territory when it comes to certain branches like this.
