Op-Ed: Arresting reporters in L.A. sends a dangerous message to repressive governments
Yahoo News ^ | 12/07/21 | Joel Simon

In the United States, and around the world, protests are vital forms of political expression. The ability of protesters to deliver their message depends on the presence of journalists, who not only inform the public but also hold the police accountable when they engage in violence or abuse.

But this fundamental right is being undermined by police abuse of journalists themselves, according to a new report by U.S. Press Freedom Tracker. In 2020, 142 journalists were arrested or detained when Black Lives Matter protests swept the nation. Although that number has declined this year, 56 arrests and detainments were documented in the U.S. through the end of November. Nearly 40% of those took place in Los Angeles County.

That record raises questions about the ability of people in Southern California to engage in political expression and sends a terrible message to the nation and the world.

An opinion piece from the LA Times because when it is their ox being gored freedom matters. But if you are politically incorrect average citizens engaging in freedom of assembly, you deserve any ill treatment the authorities choose to impose.

Engage in all the protesting you want, no problem. As soon as you block the road or throw a brick you lose your protest right and become a rioting mob. That is the point at which head cracking should commence.

“In 2020, 142 journalists were arrested or detained when Black Lives Matter protests swept the nation.”

The fact is that many of these “journalists” were Antifa members who use press credentials to try to shield themselves from arrest, while actively participating in and supporting rioters.

Pinning a card with the word “PRESS” on your backpack and holding up a cell phone does not a journalist make.

Yep, we can’t have any political repression in this country. Well, to protected classes anyway, not the poor folks still being held for the 6 January puppet show. Whose right to protest those same media have been ignoring for ten months and counting.

LA Times?

You mean the newspaper that's still sitting on a video that shows then Senator Barack Obama providing a glowing testimony to a terrorist sympathizer?

That's as comical as it is sad. What's really bad is that these people are the left in this country and they ae winning the cultural war hands down.

The latest vogue is for antifa and BLM terrorists to wear a jacket with “Press” on it.

"they are winning the cultural war hands down"

Some days I feel totally defeated and think it's all over. Then other days there are huge rays of sunshine and hope that we can defeat them. I wouldn't go so far as to say they are winning it hands-down. My sister teaches at an inner city school in Baltimore and she just sent me a letter the HR department sent out to all staff welcoming a new staff member. It says, in part...

"Ms. X received a degree from XYZ. THEY have exhibited in the following galleries. THEIR work focuses on the intersection of class, race, gender and cultural identity."
When our educators send out such blatant nonsensical garbage, we are in big trouble. They deny they are teaching CRT, but they sure have inculcated extreme WOKEism.

The question is, what were these reporters arrested for? For participation in riots? For failing to obey police orders to leave a riot situation? I doubt that ANY of them were arrested simply for reporting information that the government opposed, which is usually the case with reporters arrested in other countries.

By today's leftist standards it makes you Edward R Murrow.

I think you are over the target. Meanwhile, Antifa intimidated and attacked independent journalists like Andy Ngo because they feared his reporting. Antifa also attacked mainstream news crews, or ordinary citizens with cameras, and/or ordered them to leave certain areas.
